Studio portrait taken in Morgantown, West Virginia.
The owner of the store got this from an Estate Sale in Charlotte, Vermont (a nearby town ) and told me that the old woman who had died was the last of her family.
Purchased in "Your Home" shop, Main St., Bristol VT in 2023.

Not necessarily a favorite - or theme, (sorry!) but I chose this photograph as a perfect illustration of the typical scenario I wrote about several weeks ago.
Months ago, I saw this in my collection and it prompted me to suggest the theme of STRANGE, UNEXPLAINABLE GESTURES.
Of course, by the time that theme came around, I had completely forgotten about this one - and searched frustratingly for something that would illustrate STRANGE, etc.
I ended up using the one below - - but reluctantly because I KNEW I had been inspired by a better one!

However, thanks to Alan's last theme of the year - I get to choose the one above, which I finally found.
So...what is going on in this photograph? The girl looks incredibly sad, the little boy joyful (but is he also trying to cup his hand?) and the strange, worried looking boy with his hands in a begging position is just baffling.
Any ideas or impressions?
This is a studio photograph with no identifying information. I would guess it was taken c. late teens, early 1920s.

Bought in Bristol from an old house on the green that was having an estate sale.
At some point I want to take this to the Bristol Historical Society to see if anyone can identify her.
I would guess this is in the late 1910s to early 1920s.

At any rate, his affect mirrors my husband's happiness today in some new fish given to him by a neighbor who's moving away from Vermont.

Brought forward for the Vintage Photos Theme Park theme of "CHILDREN STANDING ON CHAIRS".
This was found in Vermont but is an unsent postcard with "Made in Canada" on the back.
I really like the interesting design of this woman's dress but the little girl is wearing very peculiar shoes.

Mary was Harry's mother but there is some mystery about her name. The story was that she married someone called Algernon Dodson but somehow he left the picture and she reverted to her maiden name. My skeptical mother-in-law told me this story believing (I think) that he was illegitimate. According to her, this side of the family considered themselves "a cut above" so it probably mildly galled her.
I have done some fairly surface searches for Algernon but have never come up with anything. For all I know it could be a true story - one more thing to do when I have time! Born in the early 1870s to James and Mary (Polly) King.

Edna was the second sibling and the oldest sister. She is the little girl in the photo titled "Stamford Hill" in my photostream. This picture, like the other Earp pictures, was sent from England to Australia and then to me from Erin (Earp) Hobson.
She looks very serious but my mother remembers all her girl cousins as loud, lively, warm and very funny.

The men are unknown except for the man on the left in the back row - that's Ernest Illingworh, husband of Ada Grimshaw.

(My husband's grandparents.) His family emigrated from Engalnd to Bellows Falls, Vermont about eight miles south of Springfield. I think Ernest is in his early twenties here but they are wearing the Springfield High School "S" so I'm puzzled by that.

Sent to me by Erin Hobson in Australia. Originally sent from England to Ausralia sometime in the 1920s. Ivy's brother Edwin had emigrated there and relatives sent pictures from home.

Originally brought forward for the Vintage Photo Theme Park theme of "Flappers". The cloche hat seems to be figuring very prominently!
Ivy's brother, Edwin (Charlie) Earp, emigrated to Australia in the early 1920's and this picture was sent out from England. This was sent to me by my second cousin in Australia, Erin Hobson (met online) along with many other wonderful photos.
Ivy was my mother's first cousin.
