This is the powdery remains of a tree stump - or a branch, I think of beech - that was used to support an interpretation panel [map] for a local footpath. Currently, very little is left and the local birds have shredded it while searching for grubs. Surprisingly, no fungii !

New Zealand has marvellous huge trees called Kauri. Remarkably, preserved ancient Kauri stumps have been found in swamp water. This is the top level of a spiral staircase carved entirely within a giant preserved (45-50,000 years) tree stump. To give an idea of the size, the carved stump extends to the light area at the lower left. I suggest viewing the PiPs for more images.

I thought I'd post an extra image today, as I'm starting to build up a bit of a back-log. Nothing special, just a rather nice looking bit of fungi that I spotted on an old tree stump whilst on a walk.

If anyone is able to identify the fungi.........I'd be grateful. I think it's most likely to be a variety of Bracket Fungus, which is common on old tree stumps.

Edit..........thanks to aNNa, I have an ID which is:Polyporus squamosus, commonly referred to as Dryad's Saddle.

Some 45 years ago, we often travelled down this road, then unsealed and with few vehicles, through beautiful native eucalypt forests. I took a photo of my son at about the location of the main image and, some years later, my daughter painted a copy of it (PiP). View main image large.

I recently returned along the road for the first time in years. It had been sealed for the use of logging trucks and I was appalled at what has been done by the forestry industry. Not only have vast areas been clear-felled, but they are being replaced by forests of non-native pines (the dark areas in the background). These are totally unsuited to the natural biota of the area.

I spotted this at the edge of a field near Rowlands Castle, Hampshire where I had parked up to take some photos,. It looks as if it's been there for a while and I thought the cut surface made an interesting natural abstract.

Best seen large on black, if you have time.

In 2010, I noticed the remains of a giant beech trunk, which was knocked down who knows when. This year, on the same day, 11 years later, the trunk of that tree still exists.
