Construction of the New Narodni Trida Metro Station, Prague, CZ, 2013

The reconstruction of the Narodni Trida Metro station has dragged on for over two years now, and this was how far it had gotten as of July, 2013. You can vaguely see the tunnel on right, but from the train you don't notice the construction. At the time I took this, the station still looked the same from the train, and indeed trains have continued to operate, albeit without stopping. Since that time, the station interior has been stripped out, and will probably be replaced. The station had accumulated a lot of water damage over the years, and not just from the 2002 flood, so I suppose they wanted to do something about it. Since I took this photo, this project has accelerated dramatically, and now a large building is being constructed over this site, the purpose of which I haven't read about yet. Presumably, the station is close to complete by now.

Flood Barriers at the Malostranska Metro Station, Malostranska, Prague, CZ, 2013

Here's a shot of the flood barriers that I mentioned earlier. This one was built around one of the shafts into the Malostranska Metro station, which if I'm not mistaken is for a cargo elevator (does anybody know?). The ones along the river looked roughly the same.

During the construction of Tunel Blanka and the Metro A-Line extension to the airport, Hradcanska Metro station was also rebuilt, including the entrances. In the past, you would have to cross the railway line through Dejvice, but now you can cut through the Metro. This is the new, modern entrance on the north side of the Dejvice line.

I've got some older photos of Depo Hostivar from when it opened in 2006, but I'm saving them for a more special occasion. This is how the station looks today, and it's still the newest A Line station since the A hasn't been extended to Ruzyne airport yet. Originally it was a normal part of the depot, as far as I know, so basically the trains still run into the former depo buildings above ground, with the throat being the only aboveground part of the Prague Metro currently used for revenue service.

Like Luziny, Hurka was part of the Zlicin extension in 1994, and like Luziny it's an above ground station. It's an alternate station to Nove Butovice, also serving Sidliste Nove Butovice.

Roztyly Station was opened on the C-Line in 1980 as part of the Haje extension. It was originally known as Primatora Vacka (Mayor Vacka), but was renamed in 1990 as part of the anti-Communist renaming of many Metro stations.

Palmovka Metro station was built on the B-Line in 1990, making it one of the first post-Communist stations. The projector and screen on the right is for the "Metrovision" news service, now being run by Barrandov Studios.

The ceiling in the platform area of Andel would have no doubt looked quite futuristic in 1977, although I don't know if it's original. I brings to mind sci-fi movies of the period.

Moskevska station, on the B-Line, now known as Andel, was built between 1977 and 1985, and was one of the original B-Line stations. It also featured more Communist propaganda in its design than any other station, especially the bronzes along the platforms celebrating the Moscow Olympics in 1980, as well as the Soviet space programme. Another theme was the "friendship" or "peace" between Moscow and Prague.......since the Soviet army invaded Prague in 1968 to ensure this would always be the case. In spite of the Soviet Union's fall, and the Velvet Revolution against Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, the modern-day Czech authorities have left the Andel station alone, with the only change being the name change to Andel in 1990.

Here's a 81-71M Class Metro train, originally built in the Soviet Union and based on Moscow Metro trains, the 81-71 Class have now been fully rebuilt with new seats and interiors, as well as modern electronics, making them 81-71M's. The 81-71 Class were not the first Prague Metro trains, though, as the first trains had been Ecs Class Metro trains similar to those now used in Budapest. The A (green) and B (yellow) lines now use them exclusively, while the C Line uses the new Seimens M1's.

The Luziny Metro Station, on Line B, was constructed in 1994 as part of the Nove Butovice-Zlicin expansion. Line B actually opened in 1985 on a more limited route from Florenc-Smichovske Nadrazi, and didn't reach its current extent (Zlicin-Cerny Most) until 1998. Kolbenova station is even newer, dating to 2001. In any case, Luziny is on of the most distinctive on the Metro system both because it's above ground and because it has these palm trees encased in glass.

Finally...the passenger subway opened in Cercany in mid-November, although I don't know the exact day. This was my first time in it, and I noted that already it had been vandalised. I heard that the train was coming in on Nastupiste 2, meaning Platform 2, so I went to Kolej 2, or Track 2, forgetting that there were 4 tracks and two new platforms. An undercover police officer, probably looking for the person who did this, promptly asked me what I was doing on the wrong platform. Not realising my mistake, I eventually figured out what he was saying, and changed platforms in time to get my train. This was the first time a police officer had ever questioned me in the Czech Republic for taking photographs, but at least someone is finally trying to stop the vandalism on this line, as I've been saying from the beginning that it's getting wrecked faster than it's being built. I do note, though, that this year the policing seems to have been more determined, and indeed the vandalism has gone down slightly.

This is an example of the train-side signs on the Karlovo Namesti platforms, which are standard except for that the letters are on a silver background, which makes them harder to read than in other stations. The little yellow square that you can see indicates, as on other lines, which line the platform is for, in this case Line B.

Standard Prague Metro station signs are color coded to match the color of the line, meaning green for the A line, yellow for the B Line, and red for the C line. The signs on the far side of the track are an exception, as they're made from metal letters attached to the wall. Karlovo Namesti, however, recently bucked this trend when these blue station signs were put in on the passenger side of the platforms...for the B line. Theoretically they should be yellow, as the blue line is only projected as of now, and my understanding is that once constructed the blue line will have dedicated platforms. I'm almost wondering if these signs are a test to see whether the new signs will look right.

Tubular Bridge at Hurka, Prague, CZ, 2009

This is one of my favorite bridges in Prague. It's actually a Metro bridge that links Hurka and Luziny, both of them in the vicinity of the larger Sidliste Nove Butovice.
