Merry Christmas to all from the snowy Pacific Northwest. The photo was taken in 2019 on a snowshoeing excursion to Herman Saddle in the North Cascades. We seem to be having a similar winter with cold temperatures and a lot of snow.

On a recent trip to western Washington to visit with family there, we hiked partway up to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. There was not enough snow for snowshoes - this was October - but enough to enjoy the winter weather there. The day was very bright and so many of the photos I took were under-exposed. This photo is of Lower Bagley Lake between the ski resort and Austin Pass. Table Mountain is visible in the background.

I've been thinking winter again since we have to drive cross-country next week and there is a major winter storm predicted for the midwest. It's easier to get around on snowshoes in such weather as we did in early March when we snowshoed to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. The three photos are all from that excursion, this looking back toward the other end of Table Mountain.

Snow and Shadow

This was taken near the end of a snowshoeing excursion to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. Table Mountain is just visible in the background and I took the photo for the long shadow that lay ahead of us. Our destination was beyond the shadow and over the top of this ridge.

The shadows were still long when we snowshoed to Herman Saddle in the North Cascades near Mount Baker even though it was around noon when we arrived at our destination. Table Mountain is the rock slope on the right and Mount Baker is around the corner.

On our recent snowshoeing trek to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker we found these wheels of snow that had come down from the surrounding slopes and then fallen over.

When we snowshoed recently to Herman Saddle in the North Cascades near Mount Baker we followed Bagley Creek for part of the way and there were still areas that had not frozen over, this near the bridge that connects Austin Pass with the trail to Herman Saddle.

The area where we went snowshoeing is a popular off-piste skiing area as well and these ski trails were on the slopes of Table Mountain.

Monday, March 4, we went snowshoeing near Mount Baker but not to our usual destination. Instead we went to Herman Saddle, a ridge that lies between Table Mountain, the long, flat-topped peak in the photo. The ridge or saddle, our destination, is on the far right of the photo. Ordinarily we would snowshoe to the area on the left of the photo where Artist's Point lies, but we wanted to do something different. The photo shows the nature of Table Mountain, too, which from other vantages appears as a smaller, round, flat peak.

This was taken snowshoeing to Herman Saddle near Mount Baker. We left the ski area and traveled along the valley in which Bagley Lakes and Bagley Creek lie with Herman Peak on our right. Our trek took us around the bottom of Herman Peak and west towards the saddle that lies between the peak and Table Mountain. As is evident from the photo, taken after a week of little snowfall, there is a lot of off piste skiing in the area.

We are on the west side of the Cascades working and visiting family and Monday went snowshoeing near Mount Baker. Instead of go up to Artist's Point as we always do we went to Herman Saddle, a longer and more strenuous trek of around seven miles with 2000 feet of elevation gain. This was the view from our destination, Mount Baker, with a shoulder of Table Mountain on the left. The insets show our destination from below and the view from the valley through which we trekked.

One of the glories of hiking to Herman Saddle, our destination on a recent snowshoeing trek, is the constant view of Mount Shuksan. This photo was from the saddle and looks back at Shuksan, which for most of the trek was behind us. The line at the foot of Shuksan is the road to Artist's Point, now covered with snow and a ski run. We had come up through the low area in the bottom center of the photo, where Upper Bagley Lake lies, also now frozen and snow-covered.

This was the view at the beginning of our snowshoeing trek to Herman Saddle, the ridge on the far right of this photo. Our trek took us around the corner of Herman Peak into the valley where Upper Bagley Lake lies and across the lake (now frozen and snow-covered) to the right of the photo. Table Mountain, the long, flat peak in the distance was on our left as we climbed.

Back in western Washington for a few day, several friends and I snowshoed to Artist's Point. On the way up Mount Shuksan to the east and Table Mountain to the west dominate the view. Only at the top does Mount Baker come into view to the south. We've snowshoed in many different places but this is still our favorite route.

Herman Saddle lies to the west of Artist's Point between Mount Herman (to the right in the photo) and Table Mountain (to the left). Below it in the valley is Upper Bagley Lake. The area is popular for hiking in the summer and one of the best trails follows the far shore of Upper Bagley Lake along the lower slopes of Mount Herman, through Herman Saddle and down to Chain Lakes before heading round the other side of Table Mountain.

Taken on our way up to Kulshan Ridge and Artist's Point to see the sunset, I captured this rather strange sky over Table Mountain as the light began to fade. You can also see if you look closely, four people traversing the slope just beneath the end of the Table Mountain, something I would not do since that area is very prone to avalanches.

This is what Table Mountain looks like from the other side (see previous photo) and in the sunshine. We were on our way up to Artist's Point on January 2, a cold and windy day, when this photo was taken.
