I suspect that these understate the presence of Omicron and the potential for near exponential growth in cases because of problems with identifying cases. Especially as this fourth wave is being added to the existing third wave of the 'Indian' variant.
There are a lot of regional variations in the progress of this new, highly transmissible, variant across England.

Personally, I think these "R" values are way too low, as Omicron is knnown to be far more infectious / transmissible than the 'Indian' variant. The UK now has the prospect of a fourth wave [Omicron] in addition to the pre-existing third wave.

There are so many new cases that the small proportion that develop severe symptoms requiring hospital treatment, do by themselves, become a significant number.
But many of those developing serious illness are unvaccinated or have not been boosted.

Cases by age group - some interesting peaks in these 13 months.
The peak in the '20-24' & '25-29' age bands in June & July are probably due to social mixing to watch football matches in the Euros competition.
The '5-14' age band comprises school-age children, and the timings of the peaks are interesting. They also are one of only two ages groups that remain un-vaccinated [apart from those with significant medical vulnerabilities].
