Although fallen on hard times this building on Broad Street in Hanley is certainly attractive. Built as a house in 1878 it was occupied by a dentist who had his surgery and offices on the ground floor with living accommodation above. it was later used by the British Gaslight Company as offices until their gasworks was sold to Stoke-on-Trent Borough Council in 1922. In the mid-1970s the Co-operative Bank had a branch here whilst the Power Group of the National Union of Mineworkers was upstairs.

Midwinter snows at the Xingyang brickworks in Henan Province. This large Hoffman kiln was firing roofing tiles during the warmer months but was laid off during the winter.

After demolition of the H & R Johnson - Richards tile works buildings in Connaught Street, Tunstall, all that remained was this tiled floor in a former office/reception area. What an excellent advert it must have been for the products of the business. All now gone as the area has been developed with the usual range of industrial sheds.

The Ship Inn stands in the Shalesmoor area of Kelham Island in Sheffield. It was built for brewers, Henry Tomlinson Ltd, Anchor Brewery, Cherry Street, Sheffield. The brewery was founded in 1889 and put out of action in 1940 by an air raid. It was merged with Carter, Milner & Bird Ltd in 1942 to form Hope & Anchor Breweries Ltd.

A plethora of glazed tiles on the frontage of the Red Lion Inn at Heckmondwike. The jutting-out section with the 'What's On' board over the window was originally a tripe shop!

Detail of the superb glazed tile exterior of the Lord Clyde in Southwark. The brewer Truman, Hanbury, Buxton & Co Ltd. was absorbed into Grand Metropolitan empire in 1971 and then merged with Watney Mann. This proved to be disastrouse for the brewery which closed in 1989. In 2010 the Truman brand was purchased by two London businessmen and in 2013 they opened a new brewery in Hackney Wick allowing Truman's beer to be stocked in a number of London pubs once again.

This mosaic was rescued from the entrance to the offices of Dennis Ruabon Tiles Ltd., and later Dennis Ruabon Limited, on High St, Ruabon. Seen at the Terracottapolis exhibition in Wrexham.

Ceramic tiles panels on 58 High Street, Leicester. This is a shop premises dating to 1903. The architect was A. E. Sawday for T. E. Butler, Son and Co., chemists. The Sea Breeze advert is a bonus. The building is listed Grade II.

Michelin House at 81 Fulham Road, Chelsea, London, was constructed as the first permanent UK headquarters and tyre depot for the Michelin Tyre Company Ltd. It opened for business on 20 January 1911. The architect behind Michelin House was François Espinasse (1880-1925), who was employed as an engineer in the construction department at Michelin's headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand. The walls inside are decorated with tile panels featuring various motor sport events of the early 1900s.

An entrance to the Grade II listed Coleridge Chambers, 175-177 Corporation St, Birmingham. The building appears to have been constructed between 1887 and 1904.

I spotted this mosaic in the entrance to the former Crown Hotel in Hawick. It was partly obscured by the two inward opening doors and the only way to capture the whole of the lettering was to close the doors to the street and use flash.

Buttercup Dairy Company

Tiled entry to a former shop of the Buttercup Dairy Company Ltd which at its peak had over 400 shops across Scotland. The corporate style was designed by James Davidson Cairns, an Edinburgh based architect. The image depicted on the tiles was taken from a painting which hung in the Leith headquarters of the firm. The original painting was by Edinburgh artist Tom Curr.

The tiles were supplied by James Duncan Ltd who appear to have specified the designs which were then manufactured either by T. & R. Boote of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent or Maw & Co of Jackfield,

Shropshire. The Duncan company objectives included not only tile laying but also other building activities including plastering, slating, marble cutting and wood block flooring, together with fireplaces and kitchen ranges. Both the upper name panel and the pictorial panel are signed, with ‘J D Ltd’ below the picture and ‘J Duncan Ltd Glasgow’ in the upper panel.
