The vending machines in Tokyo are amazing. They are on sidewalks everywhere, even in front of some houses, and you can buy a big variety of things. The blue labels denote cold things, the red are hot things. My favorite ones dispensed hot coffee in cans, which I found very tasty and also inexpensive. 130 Yen = about $1.30. You can even buy a cold beer to drink on the sidewalk, if you like.

I do not know what this figure represents, but it looks like a dog holding a snail shell to me. It could be a fox, which is the Shinto guardian of rice and sake. Come to think of it, maybe that's sake in the glass! I should have sniffed it.

Update: Stormlizard suggested this might be a "tanuki." See his comment below.

Shrines are Shinto, Temples are Buddhist. Traditionally, there is a Kumainu on either side of a temple or shrine building, each in a slightly different pose. This lion-dog figure comes from Chinese Buddhism, which spread to Japan and elsewhere in Asia. In the case of Japan, many elements came via Korea.

日本の竜 (Nihon no ryū), the Japanese dragon, is a water deity. This one is at the small Mountain Shrine in Tokyo. Japanese dragons look more vicious and snake-like than Chinese dragons.

日本の竜 (Nihon no ryū), the Japanese dragon, is a water deity. I found these to look more vicious and snake-like than Chinese dragons. Just as I uploaded this, I noticed for the first time that it has stag antlers!
