This is Lower Cathedral Lake in Yosemite National Park with Dozier Dome in the background. The last day of our stay in Yosemite we hiked the John Muir Trail from the Tuolumne Meadows Visitors' Center to Lower Cathedral Lake and then backtracked a ways and hiked to Upper Cathedral Lake.

The third day of our stay in Yosemite National Park, we hiked the John Muir trail to Cathedral Lakes, hiking to both lakes before returning to the Tuolumne Meadows Visitors' Center and to our campsite.

Burned Trees

This is what much of our area looks like at present. All the trees in the photo are dead and many have been cut down, though now, several weeks after the fire, the grass is already starting to grow again. The Gray Fire burned 10,000 acres (over 4000 hectares) and destroyed 200 homes. Many of the homes are already being rebuilt, but the trees, thousands of them, will not soon grow back, and our area will not be the same in our lifetimes. Driving through the area is rather depressing. Though the firefighters are gone, there is still a lot of activity. The utility company is replacing many power poles that were destroyed or damaged and many trees are being cut down, especially those that are near roads. Thousands more trees are dead or dying from the fire, and if they are not cut down will fall in the next few years, making a further fire hazard, This photo is typical of what we see when we drive the roads near our home.

We were in Michigan this past autumn and went several times to see the autumn colors. This was taken at North Ottawa Dunes County Park along Lake Michigan where we went for a walk with our son and daughter-in-law.

Another couple of phone photos, this one taken in upper Michigan near Grand Traverse Bay. We were on a wine tasting and cider tasting tour with our son and daughter-in-law on the Leelanau Peninsula at Suttons Bay Ciders when my wife took this with my phone.

Oak Glen is a small community in the San Bernardino Mountains of California. There is a small preserve and botanical gardens there and a number of trails which we hiked when we visited the area in 2018.

Oak Glen, California, is a small apple-growing community in the San Bernardino Mountains. There is a preserve and botanical gardens in the area that we visited when in California in 2018. We hiked some of the trails in the preserve, mostly bird-watching.

Photographed along the Cutthroat Pass Trail in early October as we hiked through some early snow. The pass is now closed for the winter and will not be open again until May or later.

In early October and in early snow we hiked to Cutthroat Pass along part of the Pacific Crest Trail. This was near the start of our hike where the snow was just a dusting along the trail. Further up we hiked in more snow.

In February, 2020, we were traveling from Carlsbad and the Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico to the Grand Canyon and drove past the entrance to Petrified Forest National Park. My wife, who loves rocks, wanted to stop. I wanted to get to the Grand Canyon but she prevailed and we spent part of day at Petrified Forest and were glad we had done so. There are petrified trees and parts of trees everywhere in the park. The photos I've posted were taken in the Crystal Forest area of the park and near the headquarters where we hiked the trails through the hills.

When in California recently we spent a day in King's Canyon National Park and camped there for a night. These are some of the Sequoia trees in the park. Sequoias are not as tall as Redwoods but are much bulkier.

These Sequoia trees were photographed near the car park for the General Grant tree. We walked the trails here, some of the few trails open in King's Canyon National Park.

Quaking Aspen

Quaking Aspen, Populus tremuloides, is a common tree in the cooler western and northern areas of North America. It often forms groves such as this, all the trees the same clone and growing from root buds. These were photographed in the Colorado Rockies near Maroon Lake.

Kitch-iti-kipi means "Big Cold Water" and is the Native American name for Michigan's largest freshwater spring. The spring is in Michigan's Upper Peninsula near Manistique and Lake Michigan and is part of Palm Book State Park. The spring is an oval pool measuring 300 by 175 feet (91 m × 53 m) and is about 40 feet (12 m) deep with an emerald green bottom. Ten thousand gallons of water a minute flow into the spring. The spring is best seen from on observation raft which i forgot to photograph, but all of the photos were taken from the raft. The inset photos include another photo of the tree-lined edge of the pond, a photo of the bottom of the spring and the trout that live in the spring, and two photos that show the turquoise color of the water and the dead trees that have fallen into the edges of the spring.
