Thought I'd post something a little different today. These were photographed on a spring outing to Vancouver, British Columbia, to Queen Elizabeth Park where we explored the Bloedel Conservatory and walked a bit out in the park.

This common bird is often seen inland but usually along the coast. This bird is drying its wings and was photographed at Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park.

This was taken from Stanley Park and looks north to the part of the harbor that is across the channel from Stanley Park. I believe the yellow is sulfur that is waiting to be shipped or has been unloaded. This will probably be my last shot from Stanley Park, though I do have some photos of birds I would like to post.

Totem Pole Detail

This is another detail shot from one of the totem poles in Stanley Park. The figures represent as grizzly bear and a man. It is Ga'akstalas and was carved by Wayne Alfred and Beau Dick in 1991 and depicts various legendary creatures from Kwakwaka-wakw culture.

This is the top of one of the totem poles in Stanley Park, Vancouver. This is part of a pole carved by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Oscar Maltipi in 1968. The Thunderbird is a familiar figure at the top of many of these poles.

This photo was taken from Stanley Park and shows a freighter coming out of the fog and from English Bay, under the Lionsgate Bridge and into the harbor. The day was like this, fog rolling in and then clearing and then coming in again.

Great Blue Heron

We photographed this heron in Stanley Park, Vancouver, while on a day's outing there. While watching and taking pictures, he suddenly snatched a large dragonfly out of the air and after holding it for a while, finally flipped it up and swallowed it.

The photo was taken last autumn at Lost Lagoon in Stanley Park, Vancouver. The birds are probably Double-crested Cormorants and they are drying their wings on a log that has obviously been much used for that purpose.
