Displayed to warm fishermen of approaching storms, with the point upwards to denote Northerly Gales and downwards for Southerly Gales.

Very important locally, because the fishing fleet was beach-launched and recovered, teh fishermen would need to know which way to "run before the storm" and seek shelter.

UK Met Office issued this list of names for the 2023/2024 winter wind storm season, with effect from 1st of September 2023.

e2a - worst season so far was 11 storms in 2015/16 ... of which five were in Jan to Mar 2016 !

e2a2 - so far [1Feb2024] 17 named storms have affected the UK {18, if you include the Channel Islands} 10 of which were named by the UK Met Office.

Warmings for Monday 22nd January 2024 - Storm Isla - The area under Amber wind warnings has been increased to cover part of SE England. Additionally, the areas with yellow "rain" warnings have been modified in Northern England and Southern Scotland.

The area covered by the Amber warning for wind has been revised, and is significantly bigger. Also extended are the yellow warnings for rain. Applies to the 21st Jan 2024 for Storm Isha.

I'm assuming this notice appeared in the breeding season, when this problem is at it's worst.
I don't know exactly where this is from, apart from somewhere on the London Underground network, which also has stations above ground.
