The capped shaft is to the left of the Engine house. The mine operated from 1729 to 1848 and workings extended under the Irish Sea over a mile from the shore. It is reputed to be the first mine in the UK to extract coal under the sea. The mine reached a depth of 456ft by 1732.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The site is now a scheduled ancient monument.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

It was probably constructed with sandstone blocks taken from the floor of the fort. It seems to be used as a car park these days.&lt;/div&gt;</description>
