Korenmolen De Hoop is een ronde stenen stellingmolen in Veen, gemeente Altena

De molen is in 1838 gebouwd in opdracht van Willem Ambrosius, wiens familie de molen bijna een eeuw lang in bezit heeft gehad. De korenmolen is in bedrijfsvaardige toestand en draait op beroepsmatige basis. Sinds 1965 is De Hoop in bezit van de Stichting Land van Heusden & Altena. De molen staat aan de Maasdijk, waar het verkeer onder de stelling passeert. Vrachtwagens moeten er uitwijken om te voorkomen dat ze in aanraking komen met de schoren. (Bron: Wikipedia)

D’Orangemolen (d'Orange Mill) is a round brick smock mill. The flour mill was commissioned in 1734 by the Prince of Orange. The mill was leased to the miller who offered the most. It was called the ‘compulsive mill’, because all local farmers were obliged to use d'Orangemolen for grinding their grain.

During the liberation in 1945 after World War II, the mill was damaged and subsequently restored several times. Nowadays the mill - with a white plastered rain side - is privately owned, but is still fully operational.

In the past, there were as many as 25 industrial mills in Weesp, which was a prosperous industrial town for centuries. Three mills remain. Two of them, De Eendragt and De Vriendschap, are located together on the banks of the river Vecht.

In the 17th century, De Eendragt (left) was a malt mill used to break grain for the brandy distillers, an important industry in Weesp. After this, it became a mill grinding shells into fine powder and in 1815 it became a wood sawmill. When this function ceased in 1932, the mill fell into disrepair. After a restoration in the 1970s, the mill is working again.

Traditional flour mill De Vriendschap (right) was built here in 1900, on the site of a 17th-century corn mill that was burned down. Nowadays the mill grinds a couple of times a week, when there is sufficient wind. The flour is for sale in the mill shop.

Molen Kijkduin - located in the village of Schoorl - is one of the country’s oldest working grain refinement mills. The windmill is a round stone ground sailer and was originally constructed in 1772. Even before 1575, there was a windmill on this site, which was set on fire by retreating Spanish soldiers in that year. It was not until 20 years later that a new mill - presumably a post mill - was built, which was demolished in 1771 and replaced by the current mill.

The mill was in regular use until 1935. After the Second World War, several restorations were carried out, and since 1973 the mill has been grinding again. Molen Kijkduin is nowadays open to the public on Saturdays and grinding takes place when there is sufficient wind. The mill has a shop where various types of flour are sold to the catering industry, residents of Schoorl and tourists.

De Zwaluw (The Swallow) is a so called smock mill. The current mill is located nearby the hamlet Oudemolen - less than 30 houses and about 75 inhabitants - since 1837. It replaced a post mill which itself had replaced a watermill on the Drentsche Aa river.

De Zwaluw is a three-storey smock mill on a single-storey brick base. There is no stage, the sails reaching almost to the ground. The smock and cap are thatched. The mill is winded by a tailpole and winch.

From 1876 til 1947 the mill was owned by the Greving brothers, who lived in a small cottage near the mill. They milled for the bakers in the area and for the farmers who fed their cattle plenty of grain.

The mill was out if use in 1970, but since 1980, the municipality of Tynaarlo is owner of the mill and after that it was subsequently thoroughly restored. Nowadays De Zwaluw has had a group of volunteer millers to run the mill (in principle the mill is open for the public on Saturdays). The mill is listed as a national Dutch monument.
