Midwinter snows at the Xingyang brickworks in Henan Province. This large Hoffman kiln was firing roofing tiles during the warmer months but was laid off during the winter.

A warning in the yard of the Xingyang brickworks. The locomotive in the background was supposed to be working but had failed and was just sitting in very light steam.

Nothing much was happening in midwinter at the Xingyang brickworks in Henan Province when I visited in 2006. It is obvious what was one of the main products.

A C2 class locomotive stands outside the maintenance depot gates on the Xingyang Brickworks Railway. This idiosyncratic little line continues to operate, with two of these little narrow gauge locomotives hauling clay to the works. Unfortunately, on this visit the working locomotive had just failed.

It doesn't snow too often in the western deserts of China so it was something a bit different to photograph as the coal empties headed for the mines on the Sandaoling coal railway.

Having made the long journey to the western deserts of China it was just after sunrise when I first set eyes upon the Sandaoling coal railway after we turned off the main road and alongside the line that runs to the mines. As we did so there was activity in the exchange yard and this JS class locomotive set off for Nanzhan light engine as there were no empties to collect. Slowly our minibus caught up with the locomotive and as we overtook and looked back it was clear that the light demanded a shot, even if it had no train behind. Before the road and rail split up we stopped, dashed out, and shot a couple of frames before it was gone. Thirty seconds later and we would have missed it.
