Chencho I: A New Hope

Yesterday, we had a long drive to a small village near Darmstadt, leaving 10 past 6AM, and returning a quarter past 3PM. And we returned not alone: our companion was a Spanish member of the European Union called Chencho. I’m sorry to say he didn’t trust me, at first. He had been sitting beside my wife in the back of the car, and knew her better, when we arrived, than the driver. But when it comes to scratching an ear, previous reserves are overcome. This is the poor beginning of –hopefully– a long series of Chencho pictures.

It hasn’t been long since Robbie died, and I do feel a bit guilty about having “replaced” him so soon. The fact is: Robbie cannot be replaced, and Chencho is no replacement, but a family member in his own right. Another fact: it appeared to be too hard for us to live without a dog.

On the left is my grandfather-in-law who rode bikes all his life, on the right a new Yamaha Majesty 400 with its proud owner posing. Some progress in design and technique is apparent, though one might argue that much of the charm of the early bikes is lost.

Ah, those grateful eyes, when the AlphaSmart veteran masterfully detects the Y-key on his Neo/US... Is it just my male chauvinism, or do they really say: "You're so CLEVER!"?

Imagine someone has lived in Germany for a long, long time. No wonder a German keyboard is attached to his trusty iMac, but that doesn't matter to him as he's got used to it.
Then, all of a sudden, an American guest appears. She'd like to use his computer to check and answer her e-mails, and that's fine with him (however severe, he's not inhuman).
She starts typing, but something seems to be wrong, and she can't Z Y...

Thank God, there's an American AlphaSmart Neo in the house, with all the characters in place. It easily connects to the Mac via a USB cable. This did the trick, and surely made her day...
