This photo was taken by an Asahi Pentax 6 X 7 medium format film camera and Super-Mult-Coated Takumar/6X7 1:4.5/75mm lens with a Asahi Pentax 6 X 7 82ø L39(UV) filter using Kodak Portra 160 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

Should you be visiting Kiama, the Visitor Information Centre on the headland is a great starting point,with pleasant staff and plenty of information available. It also has a well decorated wall. The bird shown on the building corner is an Australian Lyrebird. Happy Wednesday Wall, everyone.

Deep in our backyard bushes today was this one, a Marge-arse, a useful name if, like me, you don't like the widespread Americanism nickname. In my increasing dotage I sometimes call them Three-cornered hats; don't ask me why. They are officially “Yellow-rumped warblers” and those in Newfoundland, probably all over the Eastern parts of this continent, used to be officially called Myrtle warblers. They are very pretty.

Myrtle sounds to me like a good name too. I think Myrtle Marge-arses are the warblers I most commonly see in Ganny Cove.

Marathon is a town with a population of around 30,000 and was the site of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, in which the outnumbered Athenian army, led by the general Miltiades, defeated the Persians.

The Battle of Marathon is shrouded in the legend of the messenger Pheidippides. He is said to have carried the news of the victory from the battlefield to Athens, some 40 km away, and to have died of exhaustion after delivering the message. As Plutarch, who lived over 500 years after the battle, was the first to recount the story, it must be regarded as Attic propaganda.

The Archeological Museum of Marathon exhibits art and artifacts from various excavation sites in the vicinity.

The area has been continually inhabited since the Stone Age so a plethora of artifacts from that era all the way to the Roman period can be seen in its halls.

A Mycenaean tholos tomb from the Bronze Age, whose entrance corridor leads deep into the artificially mounded, grass-covered earthen mound.

There are two tumuli at the battlefield. One is a burial mound that houses the ashes of 192 Athenians who fell during the battle. The other houses the inhumed bodies of the Plataeans who fell during that battle.
