Marathon is a town with a population of around 30,000 and was the site of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, in which the outnumbered Athenian army, led by the general Miltiades, defeated the Persians.

The Battle of Marathon is shrouded in the legend of the messenger Pheidippides. He is said to have carried the news of the victory from the battlefield to Athens, some 40 km away, and to have died of exhaustion after delivering the message. As Plutarch, who lived over 500 years after the battle, was the first to recount the story, it must be regarded as Attic propaganda.

The Archeological Museum of Marathon exhibits art and artifacts from various excavation sites in the vicinity.

The area has been continually inhabited since the Stone Age so a plethora of artifacts from that era all the way to the Roman period can be seen in its halls.

A Mycenaean tholos tomb from the Bronze Age, whose entrance corridor leads deep into the artificially mounded, grass-covered earthen mound.

There are two tumuli at the battlefield. One is a burial mound that houses the ashes of 192 Athenians who fell during the battle. The other houses the inhumed bodies of the Plataeans who fell during that battle.

Ernest Renan (geb. 27.02.1823 in Tréguier; gest 02.10.1892 in Paris) war ein französischer Schriftsteller, Philologe, Philosoph, Epigraphiker, Historiker und Archäologe. Er war Mitglied der Académie Française.
Bekannt ist Renan auch für seine Rede vom 11. März 1882 in der Sorbonne: Qu’est-ce qu’une nation? („Was ist eine Nation?“), in der er folgende Definition gibt:

„Die Nation ist eine große Solidargemeinschaft, die durch das Gefühl für die Opfer gebildet wird, die erbracht wurden und die man noch zu erbringen bereit ist. Sie setzt eine Vergangenheit voraus und lässt sich dennoch in der Gegenwart durch ein greifbares Faktum zusammenfassen: die Zufriedenheit und den klar ausgedrückten Willen, das gemeinsame Leben fortzusetzen. Die Existenz einer Nation ist (man verzeihe mir diese Metapher) ein tägliches Plebiszit, wie die Existenz des Individuums eine ständige Bekräftigung des Lebens ist.“

In dieser Rede, die häufig auf den Ausspruch „Die Nation ist ein tägliches Plebiszit“ verkürzt wird, nahm er schon 1882 auch die Idee der Europäischen Gemeinschaft vorweg:

„Die Nationen sind nichts Ewiges. Sie haben einmal angefangen, sie werden enden. Die europäische Konföderation wird sie wahrscheinlich ablösen.“

Sein Geburtshaus (oben) ist heute zu einem Museum umgestaltet.
