I had the Raynox 250 attached to my macro lens and managed to get within about 4 cm of the insect! These insects reach a body length of approximately 7 to 15 mm. They are characterized by a "swollen," broad head, an arched, humped thorax, and a narrow abdomen that tapers into a stalk-like shape. They are brownish-black in color, with reddish-orange legs and a dark stripe across the front section of the wings. The adults are harmless and avid flower visitors. They feed on nectar and are typically found on plants in the daisy (Asteraceae) or carrot (Apiaceae) families; they are frequently encountered in meadows, at forest edges, and in gardens.
