From an old slide. That's me, launching a weather balloon in the Prince Charles Mountains back in 1966. On the tripod I have a theodolite for taking measurements of the balloon's position, allowing me to calculate the upper winds in the area. The PiP shows me taking temperature readings from instruments mounted on the main living caravan - the coldest we experienced on the trip was -39C, accompanied by about 60km/hr winds. The rounded van in the PiP is the second living caravan

Unfortunately, Pauline's health is not good, so I expect to be largely absent from ipernity in the coming weeks. I shall drop by when there is an opportunity and maybe even post an occasional image. Best wishes, everyone.

From an old slide and being reposted with a better copy. This is the "Spring Trippers" group photo on Christmas Eve, 50 years ago (1966). We were on a four month mapping trip, at this stage some 200km inland from Mawson station, Antarctica.

Copied from an ancient negative (1966). That's me among the Central Masson Ranges, after a climbing day a short distance inland from Mawson Station in Antarctica. The surface is blue ice and I'm leaning on VW "Antarctica 3" - the third in a series and the first 'usable' motor cars on the continent (one of the early explorers had a car which proved near unusable). Here's a musical link.

From an old slide. The main plateau is over 30km long, so walking it requires a few breaks. This much younger version of me is doing just that. The plateau is frequently enshrouded in cloud (as is rolling in here), so marker pegs provide guidance on the main walking routes.

Excuse me while I use this balloon launch to also launch into reminiscence.

The Met. Office staff treated me as a VIP visitor and gave me a great personal tour of the office, new equipment and the station itself (visiting areas that tourists don't normally reach).

This balloon launch shows how technology has moved ahead in the 37 years since my term on the island. The inset note shows how it was done in the "old days", with a giant radar reflector. No need for that now, the radiosonde contains a GPS which sends back the height and position. Intstead of two people frantically calculating results for temperatures and wind, that is now done with a computer. So the sequence becomes launch, then return indoors for a coffee. The other change I really noted was the far greater emphasis on safety - we didn't think about protective gear!

Snow drifting off the plateau

From an old slide, taken not long after arrival. That's a slightly younger (and slightly out of focus) me standing near the old meteorological office (at that stage used as a store), with new supply boxes still strewn around. This was taken very early in the morning, with the first light colouring the thin cloud and an impressive wall of drifting snow in the distance beyond the Casey Range (itself some 30km away). The scene here is almost identical to that largely blotted out by drifting snow in the earlier "blizzard" shot.
