Oben am Pass Grand Saint Bernard befindet sich der gleichnamige See. Durch den See verläuft die Grenze zwischen Italien und der Schweiz, wobei der größere Teil des See auf der schweizer Seite liegt.

Die runden Steinplatten unter dem Speicher verhindern, dass Mäuse und Ratten an die drinnen gelagerten Kornvorräte rankommen. Solche historischen Holzbauten sind typisch für das Kanton Wallis. Besonders hier im Goms.

In dem kleinen Ort Selkingen ist mir dieser schöne alte Speicher aufgefallen. Das aufgestelzte Gebäude und die verwitterten Holzbalken verleiten zu einem Foto. Der Speicher hat ringsum keine Fenster und ist an der Seite über eine Außentreppe erreichbar.

Marathon is a town with a population of around 30,000 and was the site of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, in which the outnumbered Athenian army, led by the general Miltiades, defeated the Persians.

The Battle of Marathon is shrouded in the legend of the messenger Pheidippides. He is said to have carried the news of the victory from the battlefield to Athens, some 40 km away, and to have died of exhaustion after delivering the message. As Plutarch, who lived over 500 years after the battle, was the first to recount the story, it must be regarded as Attic propaganda.

The Archeological Museum of Marathon exhibits art and artifacts from various excavation sites in the vicinity.

The area has been continually inhabited since the Stone Age so a plethora of artifacts from that era all the way to the Roman period can be seen in its halls.

Lekythos

Oil flasks are often found amongst grave goods.

This one was found in the Athenian burial mound (soros) at Marathon and is attributed to the ‘Painter of Athens 581’. It depicts a winged figure (Nike?).

Die Russische Kirche (offizielle Bezeichnung: Храм Святителя Николая Штутгарт, transkribiert: Chram Swjatitelja Nikolaja Stuttgart, deutsch: St.-Nikolaus-Kathedrale Stuttgart) ist eine im Jahr 1895 nach Plänen der Architektensozietät Eisenlohr & Weigle errichtete russisch-orthodoxe Kirche in Stuttgart. Finanziert wurde die Kirche von der russischen Regierung.

Der Bau ging auf eine Anregung von Wera Konstantinowna Romanowa, einer Adoptivtochter des württembergischen Königs Karl I. zurück. Zwischen dem württembergischen Königshaus und dem letzten Zaren Nikolaus II. bestanden enge dynastische Bindungen, denn auch die Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg diente bis 1899 als russisch-orthodoxes Gotteshaus.
