La serre du Château des Ravalet à Tourlaville (Cherbourg-en-Cotentin) est une spectaculaire serre à rotonde du XIXe siècle (construite entre 1873 et 1875) et l'une des rares de cette époque encore conservées en Normandie
Architecture : Elle présente une structure métallique et vitrée remarquable avec une rotonde centrale, entièrement rénovée pour retrouver son lustre d'autrefois
Elle s'ouvre sur un jardin à la française symétrique et rigoureux, aux volutes de gazon et buis taillés.
Le parc de 14 hectares et la serre abritent ou ont abrité des floraisons spectaculaires (comme de superbes bougainvilliers) et s'inscrivent dans un domaine labellisé « Jardin remarquable » et classé Monument historique

Marathon is a town with a population of around 30,000 and was the site of the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC, in which the outnumbered Athenian army, led by the general Miltiades, defeated the Persians.

The Battle of Marathon is shrouded in the legend of the messenger Pheidippides. He is said to have carried the news of the victory from the battlefield to Athens, some 40 km away, and to have died of exhaustion after delivering the message. As Plutarch, who lived over 500 years after the battle, was the first to recount the story, it must be regarded as Attic propaganda.

The Archeological Museum of Marathon exhibits art and artifacts from various excavation sites in the vicinity.

The area has been continually inhabited since the Stone Age so a plethora of artifacts from that era all the way to the Roman period can be seen in its halls.

The sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods

near Marathon was founded by the wealthy Greek orator and politician Herodes Atticus, who was a native of Marathon and lived there. The complex may have been built on his estate.

The statue depicts the deified Antinous as Osiris

Antinous was the favourite of the Roman Emperor Hadrian, who drowned in the Nile. After his death, he was venerated throughout the Roman Empire. Here, he is depicted merged with the Egyptian god of the dead, Osiris

A herm

is a sculpture consisting of a head (missing here) and a torso, on which, as can be seen here, male genitalia may also be carved. The upper part of the stone bears a funerary inscription, suggesting that this herm is a funerary stele.

In ancient Greece, phallic representations had a protective function. They were intended to ward off evil.
