Chalcis (aka Chalkida), the capital of the island of Euboea, situated on the Euripus Strait at its narrowest point, today is a city of about 60.000 inhabitants.

The earliest recorded mention of Chalcis is in the Iliad. In the 8th and 7th centuries BC, settlers from Chalkis founded cities in southern Italy and Sicily, amongst other places. The city reached the height of its importance during the Archaic period, when it was one of the most significant trading centres in the whole of Hellas. Its main economic activities were fishing for purple snails and metalworking.

In 506 BC, the city came under Athenian control. Despite the tensions, Chalkis supported the alliance during the Persian Wars. Chalkis was forced to join the Attic League, but repeatedly attempted, without success, to rebel against Athens. From 338 BC onwards, Philip II of Macedonia controlled the city. Owing to its strategic location on the Euripus, the Macedonians developed Chalkis into a stronghold.

In 146 BC, the city fell to the Roman Empire and lost much of its political significance. Under the Eastern Roman Empire, the city gradually recovered.

The Triarchy of Negroponte was a Crusader state founded on the island of Euboea (Venetian: Negroponte) following the partition of the Byzantine Empire after the Fourth Crusade. Euboea was granted to Boniface of Montferrat, King of Thessaloniki. Boniface, in turn, ceded the island as a fief to the Flemish nobleman Jacques II of Avesnes. Euboea subsequently came under the influence of Venice. From around 1390, the island became a regular Venetian colony known as the ‘Reame di Negroponte’.

Negroponte played a significant role in the history of Frankish Greece, but Chalkis was finally captured by the Ottoman Empire after a long siege in 1470. Under Turkish rule, the town became a fortified stronghold and an important naval base.

Since 1833, Chalkis has been part of the newly founded, independent Greek state.

The two-storey villa, built in an eclectic or neoclassical style, was probably constructed around 1900. The building dates from the period of urban expansion that began following the demolition of the Ottoman fortress walls in 1885. The building could do with a bit of renovation.

... ist ein Gebäude am Wasser in Viña del Mar , Region Valparaíso , Chile , an der Avenida La Marina 37, zwischen der Mündung des Marga-Marga-Ästuars und dem Badeort Caleta Abarca . Seit 2005 beherbergt es den Sitz der Denkmalschutzbehörde der Gemeinde Viña del Mar.

Es wurde zwischen 1905 und 1906 erbaut und 1920 sowie 1946 umgebaut. Am 20. September 1995 wurde es vom Bildungsministerium zum „ Nationalen Historischen Denkmal “ erklärt .

Gustavo Wulff , ein deutscher Geschäftsmann und Philanthrop, der 1881 nach Chile kam , beschloss, in Viña del Mar eine Residenz am Meer zu errichten . Dafür musste er bei der chilenischen Regierung ein Sondergesetz beantragen, das ihm den Bau an der Küste erlaubte – ein Antrag, der 1904 bewilligt wurde.

Nach dem Grundstückserwerb begannen die Bauarbeiten 1905 und wurden 1906 abgeschlossen . Das zweistöckige Gebäude im deutsch - französischen Stil war einem alten Herrenhaus in Liechtenstein nachempfunden . Es besaß ein Steinfundament und ein Holzdach . Außerdem verfügte es über drei Türme mit jeweils zwei großen Terrassen.

Ende der 1910er Jahre beauftragte Wulff den Architekten Alberto Cruz Montt mit dem Umbau des Gebäudes, das daraufhin mit Stein verkleidet wurde . 1920 wurde ein Rundturm hinzugefügt, der über eine Brücke im mittelalterlichen Stil mit dem Hauptgebäude verbunden ist, und die Fenster wurden vergrößert.

Nach Gustavo Wulffs Tod im Jahr 1946 ging der Bau in die Hände von Frau Esperanza de Artaza Matta über, die das Schloss umbaute, indem sie zwei der drei Türme entfernte, den Haupteingang verbreiterte und einen Steinbau im englischen Stil hinzufügte .

1959 erwarb die Gemeinde Viña del Mar das Gebäude und übergab es ein Jahr später der chilenischen Marine zur Unterbringung des Marine- und Schifffahrtsmuseums . Aus Gründen des Schutzes der Sammlung ordnete der Oberbefehlshaber der Marine , Admiral José Toribio Merino , im Oktober 1986 die Verlegung des Museums in das alte Gebäude der Marineschule Arturo Prat in Valparaíso an.

Das Gebäude stand bis 1989 leer, als es an DIBAM verliehen wurde . 1990 nahm dort das Museum für Maritime Kultur seinen Betrieb auf und stellte eine Sammlung von Objekten und Texten von Salvador Reyes aus. Am 20. September 1995 wurde es durch Dekret Nr. 530 des chilenischen Bildungsministeriums zum „Nationalen Historischen Denkmal“ erklärt. Das Museum für Maritime Kultur war dort bis 1999 ansässig.

Das Schloss stand bis 2001 leer, als es an die Gemeinde Viña del Mar übergeben wurde, die dort verschiedene Ämter und Abteilungen einrichtete. Seit 2005 beherbergt das Schloss den Sitz der Denkmalpflegeabteilung der Gemeinde Viña del Mar sowie ein Ausstellungszentrum. Im selben Jahr nutzte die Nachrichtenredaktion von Kanal 13 das Schloss für die Hauptausgabe von Teletrece, die über das Festival von Viña del Mar berichtete, für das der Fernsehsender die Übertragungsrechte besaß. Dies wiederholte sich im darauffolgenden Jahr.

Letztes Jahr wurde diese Fläche noch landwirtschaftlich genutzt (Getreide).
Nun hat der Landwirt eine Produktionspause eingelegt und eine insektenfreundliche Mohnwiese angelegt.
