HummingBird Hawk moth feeding on Himalayan Balsam.
I had never seen one until this year and Ive seen easily 6-7 in the last couple of months.
First ive managed to get a photo of and it wasn't easy!!!

Part of our recent trip to Norway was a hike to Trolltunga (Troll's Tongue). This popular hiking destination is east of Bergen and we spent a day hiking there. This native orchid was one of the wildflowers we saw along the way and I've identified it as Gymnadenia conopsea, the Chalk Fragrant Orchid.

Wandmalereien (Trompe L'Œil) in Lyon
Sie sind eine echte Besonderheit und mittlerweile schon eine Tradition in Lyon: Überall in der Stadt findet man die bemalten Hauswände.
Oft sind es große Fassaden, die komplett bemalt sind, sei es mit Fresken oder einem Trompe L'Œil (einem täuschend echt wirkenden Bild). Dadurch sind nicht nur die grauen Fassaden aus Lyon verschwunden, sondern es gibt mittlerweile unzählige große öffentliche Kunstwerke zum Anschauen. Sozusagen eine Art Mega-Streetart.

Gestaltet wurden die Wandbilder von der Künstlergruppe Cité Creation, die 1978 in Lyon entstanden ist. Nach und nach bemalten sie immer mehr Fassaden der Stadt und werteten so Häuser und ganze Viertel auf. Heute bemalt die Künstlergruppe überall auf der Welt Fassaden, insgesamt sind es bisher 600 Stück.

It belongs to the scorpionflies (Mecoptera) and, despite its imposing appearance, is completely harmless to humans. Males possess a raised copulatory organ on their abdomen that bears a striking resemblance to a scorpion's stinger, but it is neither venomous nor stinging. The head is elongated downwards, resembling a beak. The four transparent wings with dark, spotted patterns are typical. It feeds mainly on dead or weakened insects, occasionally also on flower nectar or fruit. Sometimes it even steals prey from spiderwebs. It can be found in damp, shady places such as forest edges and bushes. Males often offer females a "nuptial gift" in the form of food to increase their readiness to mate.

Il appartient à la famille des mécoptères et, malgré son apparence imposante, est totalement inoffensif pour l'homme. Les mâles possèdent un organe copulateur saillant sur l'abdomen qui ressemble étrangement à un dard de scorpion, mais il n'est ni venimeux ni urticant. La tête est allongée vers le bas, évoquant un bec. Ses quatre ailes transparentes, tachetées de sombre, sont caractéristiques. Il se nourrit principalement d'insectes morts ou affaiblis, et occasionnellement de nectar ou de fruits. Il lui arrive même de voler des proies dans les toiles d'araignée. On le trouve dans des endroits humides et ombragés, comme les lisières de forêts et les buissons. Les mâles offrent souvent aux femelles un « cadeau nuptial » sous forme de nourriture pour les inciter à s'accoupler.

Rigi - die Königin der Berge! Und das ist wahrhaftig so. Vom Rigi Kulm, dem höchsten Gipfel, mit einer Höhe von 1797 Meter ü. NN hat man einen fantastischen Ausblick auf die Alpine Landschaft der Schweiz und den Vierwaldstädter See. Von Vitznau und von Goldau gelangt man bequem mit der Zahnradbahn auf den Gipfel.

Returning back home after 2 weeks vacation in Germany I made a short detour to capture this image of Stone Castle in Greenhithe Kent, England. The 3 storey square tower of the building on the left is medieval, probably late 12th century while the rest of the building dates from 1825.

I'm submitting this photo for World Photography Day because it represents an important event in my life; 56 years ago (almost to the day) I began working here in my first job after graduating from University. Significantly it also records my first visit to Stone Castle for almost 56 years because the Geology Department of Blue Circle & I relocated to Leicestershire 3 weeks after starting here. It also represents the passage of those years because it is clear that the building and gardens are now derelict!

As a life-long railway enthusiast & photographer I admire the iconic British lensman Colin Gifford who pioneered the "New Approach" to railway photography in the 1960s during the declining years of UK steam. American photographer O. Winston Link is also high on my list of favourites.
