La cathédrale Saint Pierre d’Aleth (aujourd'hui Saint-Malo) fut fondée au IXe siècle, puis détruite par les envahisseurs normands au Xe siècle, avant d’être reconstruite. Le site d’Aleth n’était toutefois pas sûr et la ville de Saint-Malo avait commencé à se développer sur un site bien plus facile à défendre, situé sur un îlot rocheux dans l’estuaire. En 1146, le siège de l’évêché d’Aleth fut transféré à Saint-Malo. La rivalité avec la nouvelle ville atteignit son paroxysme en 1255, lorsque le mécontentement d’Aleth face aux exigences fiscales de Saint-Malo déboucha sur un conflit armé. Aleth fut vaincue, et ses remparts, sa forteresse et son église furent démantelés en guise de punition. Les ruines de l’ancienne cathédrale sont encore visibles dans le quartier Saint-Servan, qui occupe le territoire de l’ancienne Aleth.

IT USED TO BE A CATHEDRAL. The Cathedral of Saint Pierre in Aleth (now Saint-Malo) was founded in the 9th century, then destroyed by Norman invaders in the 10th century, before being rebuilt. However, the site of Aleth was not secure, and the town of Saint-Malo had begun to develop on a site far easier to defend, situated on a rocky islet in the estuary. In 1146, the seat of the Bishopric of Aleth was transferred to Saint-Malo. Rivalry with the new town reached its peak in 1255, when Aleth’s discontent with Saint-Malo’s tax demands led to armed conflict. Aleth was defeated, and its ramparts, fortress and church were dismantled as a punishment. The ruins of the old cathedral can still be seen in the district of Saint-Servan, which occupies the territory of the former Aleth.

Jh. von den normannischen Invasoren zerstört und anschliessend wieder aufgebaut. Der Standort von Aleth war jedoch nicht sicher, und die Stadt Saint-Malo hatte begonnen, sich an einem weitaus leichter zu verteidigenden Ort zu entwickeln, der auf einer felsigen Insel in der Flussmündung lag. Im Jahr 1146 wurde der Sitz des Bistums Aleth nach Saint-Malo verlegt. Die Rivalität mit der neuen Stadt erreichte 1255 ihren Höhepunkt, als die Unzufriedenheit von Aleth angesichts der Steuerforderungen von Saint-Malo zu einem bewaffneten Konflikt führte. Aleth wurde besiegt, und seine Stadtmauern, seine Festung und seine Kirche wurden zur Strafe abgerissen. Die Ruinen der ehemaligen Kathedrale sind noch heute im Stadtviertel Saint-Servan zu sehen, die das Gebiet des ehemaligen Aleth einnimmt.

Der Turm auf dem Gömnitzer Berg (93,8m ü.NN) wurde 1826/27 als Ersatzseezeichen, für einen Baum gebaut wurde, der durch einen Blitz zerstört wurde.

Notre-Dame d’Avesnières was built in the 11th and 12th centuries in the Romanesque style. In the 19th century, it was elevated to the status of a basilica, and a bell tower combining Gothic and Renaissance styles was added to top the roof. It houses a rich collection of statues. I was impressed by the 3.50-metre-tall statue of Saint Christopher (16th century, on the right in the collage).

BANC DOUBLE DANS LA COUR DE L'EGLISE. Notre-Dame d’Avesnières a été construite aux XIe et XIIe siècles, dans un style roman. Au XIX siècle elle est élevée au rang de basilique, et un clocher mêlant les styles gothique et Renaissance vient compléter le toit. Elle renferme un riche ensemble de statues. J'étais impressionnée par Saint Christophe (XVIe) avec ses 3,50 m de haut (à droite dans le collage).

DOPPELBANK AUF DEM KIRCHHOF. Notre-Dame d’Avesnières wurde im 11. und 12. Jh. im romanischen Stil erbaut. Im 19. Jh. wurde sie zur Basilika erhoben, und ein Glockenturm, der Elemente des gotischen und des Renaissance-Stils vereint, vervollständigt das Dach. Sie enthält eine reichhaltige Sammlung von Statuen. Besonders beeindruckt hat mich der 3,50 m hohe Heilige Christophorus aus dem 16. Jh. (rechts in der Collage).

Die Schwarze Sara ist eine Heilige, die in der Krypta der Notre-Dame-de-la-Mer steht. Jedes Jahr im Mai pilgern tausende Roma zu ihr und tragen sie in einer Prozession an den Strand um sie mit Meerwasser zu benetzen. Es gibt keine gesicherten Überlieferungen über sie. Angeblich soll sie um 40 n.Chr. mit drei anderen heiligen Frauen mit einem Schiff nach Südfrankreich gekommen sein, um das Christentum zu missionieren.

Die alte Wanderkarte auf einer Tafel direkt neben dem Ferienheim des VEB Robotron in Freiberg bei Adorf zeigt immer noch die alten Bezeichnungen aus der DDR-Zeit als die Tschechische Republik noch CSSR hieß. Vom Wanderschild bis zum hier gezeigten Grenzabschnitt sind es nur 4 Kilometer.

A column-lined walkway in a North Wales seaside town has been getting an £800,000 makeover to prevent it deteriorating further. Llandudno’s iconic Colonnade has undergone a major restoration, and is now looking very smart.

The concrete art deco structure, a 170-metre covered walkway leading to Happy Valley on the Great Orme headland, has been a prominent feature of the Llandudno promenade since the 1930s, and was re-opened on Friday, March 20 this year.
