Athens, the southernmost capital on the European mainland, is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning over 3,400 years.

According to Greek mythology the city was named after Athena, the ancient Greek goddess of wisdom. Classical Athens was one of the most powerful city-states in ancient Greece. It was a centre for democracy, the arts, education and philosophy, and was highly influential throughout the European continent, particularly in Ancient Rome. For this reason it is often regarded as the cradle of Western civilisation and the birthplace of democracy.

The simple cross-in-square church, church dates from third quarter of the 11th century, but from its initial form only the north side and the dome survive. The other sides were altered due to the expansion that was carried out for enlarging the interior area. Interventions were also made to the church during the Turkish occupation (1456-1833), as it is indicated in the northern side by the pointed arch, a characteristic of the Ottoman architecture.

The Athens Metro is one of the oldest underground railway systems in the world.

The first section came into service in 1869. It operated as an above-ground steam railway, linking the port of Piraeus with the Athens suburb of Thissio. It was founded by British entrepreneurs as the Athens-Piraeus Railways, before passing into Greek hands in 1875.

By 1895, the line had been extended as far as Omonia Square. In 1904, the line was electrified, marking the start of proper underground operations. Today, the underground has a total route length of over 90 km.

I was fortunate to have the long lens on the camera when this young White-bellied Sea Eagle came by (see also PiPs). The brown colour shows it's a young one (under 5-6 years) - the colour changes as they reach maturity. These can grow to a wingspan of about 2.2 M and are found around Australia and in southeast Asia.
