Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly at the New York Botanical Garden (Bronx, New York)—July 24, 2026. A texture was used to create the final image.

Suspended between blossom and light, an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly emerges from a landscape softened by haze, texture, and memory. Its wings remain briefly visible as the surrounding garden dissolves into luminous silence. The image invites the viewer into the fleeting moment between presence and disappearance.

Pylos has been inhabited since Neolithic times. It was a significant kingdom in Mycenaean Greece, with the remains of the so-called "Palace of Nestor" excavated nearby, named after Nestor, the king of Pylos in Homer's Iliad. During the Peloponnesian War, the Bay of Pylos was the site of the Battle of Sphacteria in 425 BC.

In the Middle Ages, during the time of the Crusades, Pylos fell to the Principality of Achaia, founded in 1205. In the 1280s the Franks built the Old Navarino castle. Pylos came under the control of the Republic of Venice from 1417 until 1500, when it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire.

The Ottomans used Pylos and its bay as a naval base, and built the New Navarino / Niokastro fortress there. The area remained under Ottoman control, with the exception of a brief period of renewed Venetian rule from 1685–1715 and a Russian occupation from 1770–71, until the outbreak of the Greek War of Independence in 1821.

The Niokastro covers an area of approximately 70,000 square meters (about 7 hectares). The fortress is strategically located on a hill at the southern entrance to Pylos Bay. There is a lower-lying, sprawling lower castle and a heavily fortified, hexagonal upper castle at the highest point of the complex.

The Archaeological Museum of Pylos is housed in the "Maizonos building" located in the archaeological site of Niokastro Fortress.

Ich habe diesen Käfer auch erst das erstemal entdeckt,er ist ca 5,5 bis 8,5 mm groß und man sieht ihn von Mai bis September,er ist sehr gerne in Laub- und Mischwäldern unterwegs.Der Kopf ist außergewöhnlich breit gebaut und scharf gegen den restlichen Körper abgegrentzt,grundsätzlich schwarz, wirkt durch die eng anliegende, feine Behaarung aber oft graubraun mit hellem Fleckenmuster.Bei den Stachelkäfern ist das Hinterleibsende spitz verlängert, bei dieser Art jedoch im Vergleich zu verwandten Arten eher kurz und hinten leicht abgestumpft.Seine Körperform ist keil- bzw. buckelförmig gebogen.Sie sind sehr flink und agile Krabbler :))

I also just discovered this beetle for the first time; it's about 5.5 to 8.5 mm long and can be seen from May to September. It prefers deciduous and mixed forests. The head is exceptionally broad and sharply defined against the rest of the body. It's generally black, but due to the close-lying, fine hairs, it often appears grayish-brown with a light spotted pattern. In spiny beetles, the end of the abdomen is elongated to a point, but in this species, it's rather short compared to related species and slightly blunt at the rear. Its body shape is wedge-shaped or humped. They are very quick and agile crawlers :))

Je viens moi aussi de découvrir ce coléoptère pour la première fois ; il mesure environ 5,5 à 8,5 mm de long et on peut l'observer de mai à septembre. Il affectionne les forêts de feuillus et les forêts mixtes. Sa tête est exceptionnellement large et bien délimitée par rapport au reste du corps. Généralement noir, il apparaît souvent gris-brun clair tacheté en raison de ses fins poils denses. Chez les coléoptères épineux, l'extrémité de l'abdomen est pointue, mais chez cette espèce, elle est plutôt courte comparée à celle des espèces apparentées et légèrement arrondie à l'arrière. Son corps est cunéiforme ou bossu. C'est un rampant très rapide et agile ! :))

Während unseres Aufenthaltes in Saarburg (Rheinland-Pfalz) hatten wir in einem Nebengebäude des "Hotels Am Markt" unser Zimmer. Dort hing auch ein Bild der bekannten amerikanischen Schauspielerin "Audrey Hepburn".
Das Foto entstand ohne Zimmerbeleuchtung nur mit dem Licht der von außen hereinscheinenden Straßenbeleuchtung. Dadurch entstand ein interessanter Effekt.
