Duranta erecta est une espèce d' arbuste à fleurs de lafamille des Verbénacées , originaire du Mexique, d'Amérique du Sud et des Caraïbes . Largement cultivée comme plante ornementale dans les jardins tropicaux et subtropicaux du monde entier, elle s'est naturalisée dans de nombreux endroits. On l'appelle communément goutte d'or , baie d'envol ou fleur du ciel .
Le Duranta erecta est un arbuste rampant , ou plus rarement un petit arbre . Il peut atteindre 6 m de hauteur et autant de largeur. Les sujets adultes possèdent des épines à l'aisselle des feuilles , souvent absentes chez les jeunes plants. Ses feuilles , vert clair, elliptiques à ovales et opposées, mesurent jusqu'à 7,5 cm de long et 3,5 cm de large, avec un pétiole de 1,5 cm.

Les fleurs , bleu clair ou lavande, sont regroupées en grappes serrées sur les tiges terminales et axillaires, parfois en panicules , souvent recourbées ou pendantes, et fleurissent en été. Le fruit est une petite baie globuleuse jaune ou orange , mesurant jusqu'à 11 mm de diamètre et contenant plusieurs graines
