We are back in Durham here above the River Wear. Taking this bridge right ways takes us up to the famous Cathedral that can just about be seen here. Another of the rivers bridges makes an appearance here too.

Walking through the old streets of this town draws us back into the past. I liked the mullioned windows of this building which must at one time been of some importance here. It appears now that all or part of this is in fact an old Inn as can be seen in the photo at full screen: The Sandhill Arms.

The Sandhill Name: The area was originally a literal hill of naked sand exposed when the tide of the River Tyne went out, before the Quayside was embanked. It has16th-Century Roots: The structure at 44 Sandhill dates back to the 16th century, a period when the Sandhill was the bustling center of town government, shipping, and trade, home to wealthy merchant families and grand residences. Before becoming the Sandhill Arms, the building was well-known to locals as The Hop and Cleaver and later Offshore 44, with historical merchant shops and old stables located at the rear.

Taken whilst travelling from Italy to Switzerland on the famous Gothard Pass in September 2013. I think we are looking backwards here, southwest towards the Swiss Ticino mountain range around Basòdino.

A walk along the river here is a must for any visitor as we head west towards Neidpath Castle on this spring morning in May and these seats give ample opportunities to observe this fine town from the river bank. Centre stage here is the Leckie Memorial Church (built in 1876) with its 146 foot spire.
The Pip shows another view across the River Tweed towards the ‘Old Parish Church’ (Church of Scotland) constructed in 1886.

As the nights get colder we have dew almost every morning. Here we are in my back garden looking down upon this very small and dainty spider’s web as the dew forms into silver glass balls. You can have an idea of how small an area this was as my camera lens is stopped down to F16 and still many of the dew drops remain out of focus. – The eyes – goodness knows but if you look a little longer you can start to imagine a nose and mouth too.

A look down the Onya River in Gerona, Catalonia, Spain from one of its many bridges showing these most colourful houses. The impressive Girona Cathedral sits to the right of centre with the Collegiate Church of Sant Feliu to the far left.

Here we see the mighty Tyne Bridge spanning the River Tyne in North East England, linking Newcastle upon Tyne (left side) and Gateshead, viewed from the historic Swing Bridge. It is an iconic Grade II listed through-arch bridge opened on October 10, 1928, by King George V. It is currently undergoing a major restoration project. Underneath us we see part of the old timber and steel structure of the swing bridge on which I am stood. In the distance further down the river, the curved white arch of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the dome of The Glasshouse are visible

The wonders of Camusdarach

As we leave the Mallaig area and head back south towards England via Peebles, I leave you with one of its most memorable sights: we are looking here across the waters to the flat headed Island of Eigg with The peaks of Rum to the right. This small area is full of little bays and coves with its pristine gold and almost white sands in places.

This spot is in fact quite close to where we spent a week with our caravan in 2016. See Pips for a couple of my many memorable photos from that time.

As we head for our second holiday area (Peebles) on this fortnight in Scotland, about 20 miles east of Fort William, we pass this impressive dam and reservoir.
It is described as a Category A-listed mass concrete gravity dam located on the River Spean in the Scottish Highlands. It was built in 1934 as part of the Lochaber Hydro-Electric Scheme to generate hydroelectric power.
To complete the picture I enclose two PiP’s from anther visit here in Jan 2020

We are still on the Cami de Ronda and this almost Fjord-like cove is actually Cala Bona. There are caves in the cliffs around here.

The lonely road to Tarbet

That is Tarbet on Loch Nevis. We are actually almost half way down Loch Morar heading east towards the remote hamlet of Swordland * (we never got that far), this was our turnaround point. The path eventually heads north to Tarbet just past Swordland. Had we walked as far as Tarbet, our only means back to Mallaig was via the Loch Nevis, Western Isles Ferry that we had earlier taken a trip to Inverie on. PiP

* During World War II, Swordland Lodge was requisitioned for training, and used by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) as a Special Training School, designated STS23b, where personnel—including Norwegian soldiers—trained for operations along the Norwegian coast

A character that I came across on the quayside of New Castle. He was sat near the Millennium Bridge with a small collection of monies besides him, giving the impression he was down on his luck. He did not offer his name nor I ask for it but on reflection I really do wish I had found out more about him. He readily struck up this pose for my quick photograph here as we struck up a light conversation about photography.
I presume (but did not know for certain) that he was a veteran of our armed forces as his cap badge belonged to the Mercian Brigade regiment that had components of the Cheshire Regiment, Worcestershire Regiment, South and North Staffordshire Regiments.

The wild path to Cala Pola

We are on the scenic coastal path from Tossa de Mar to the cove of Cala Pola. This path is part of the Cami de Ronda natural track and is classed as moderately rugged with uneven terrain, pine forest and rocky cliffs. (You can say that again). A round trip from Tossa is only around 6km but it takes a good two hours to complete. (I think you can see why.) The PiP shows a different stretch a little distance away. We were quite happy on completing this which we considered not bad for two doddering pensioners (˚◡˚)

We are at Elvet Bridge over the River Wear in Durham City. A great day to go rowing and this is where they go from. The stone bridge is ancient, originally being built in the 12th century under Prince-Bishop Pudsey. This medieval stone structure features pointed arches and is a designated Grade I listed building.
