We head out early tomorrow morning for five days of backpacking in the area of Mount Assiniboine in the Canadian Rockies where we will be entirely out of touch with civilization and electronics.

This is Penstemon eatonii, the Firecracker Penstemon, photographed along the La Verkin Creek trail in Zion National Park (Utah). There were not a lot of wildflowers blooming when we were there but those we saw we did photograph.

This view of Angel's Landing looks north up the canyon from the beginning of the West Rim trail. The park was very busy and crowded and after hiking the two trails we went on to a motel in Hurricane, Utah. We will not be visiting that part of the park again. It was nearly impossible to find parking at the visitors' center, the huge shuttle buses were crowded and the trails had far too many people on them.

We hiked to the canyon, ordinarily accessed by an off-road vehicle, through three miles of deep sand, a very strenuous hike. The canyon was worth the hike, however, and easily explored on foot. Many such slot canyons can be explored only with difficulty using ropes and other climbing equipment, which we do not have and did not know how to use.

The best known of these slot canyons is Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona, a place we visited on the last day of our trip. The photo was taken with my phone camera, which seemed to do a better job with the uneven light than my camera, but perhaps that was just my inexpertise with my camera, which seemed to have difficulty with the light and shadow.

These slot canyons are obviously formed by water, and though dry, a creek, Red Canyon Creek, runs through this canyon. For that reason it is very dangerous to be in these canyons if there is any possibility of rain in the area, even far away. Flash floods are common and there have been any number of deaths in these canyons as a result of such floods.

</media:text>

The hike was very difficult through three miles of sand each way, but the canyon was spectacular and worth the hike. Parts of the canyon were not as deep as this, but the immensity of the canyon is well shown in this photo which includes my wife. We were in the canyon when the light was best and the colors were amazing.
