Construction of the Teatro Municipal began in 1886, shortly after Chile annexed the area from Peru, following the War of the Pacific and was finished in 1889. It is located in the Atacama desert, the driest in the world. The theater was constructed from Oregon pine, which was brought to Iquique by clipper ships from the United States. It has 784 seats.

Tumamoc Hill is a popular walking area. This house and bench are at the beginning of the road, a climb of about 210 meters in a bit over 2 km. The hill is actually higher but the upper part is blocked off to the public. There are scenic benches on the way up and at the end of the public area, but I like this one better. I have walked up the hill many times, always early in the morning, and never seen anyone on this bench. I’ve seen people seated on the benches further up the hill. The photos of loved ones on the table to the right and the many other offerings indicate that this is an important place for other people who may not be among the early morning walkers.

I was taken to Yellowstone as a child, then went twice again as an adult—always in the summer. Then we went in the winter. The steam plumes rising from geysers in the winter are much more dramatic. That’s when I took this photo.

Near Borrego Springs, California, the park is in the westernmost part of the Sonora Desert. The plant in the foreground is an ocotillo and is about 6 meters tall. Better seen large.

Andy Goldsworthy, Storm King Wall, 1997-98. The wall is about 694 meters long and is made of 1,579 tons of field stones. Incorporating the remains of a fallen-down farm wall that Goldsworthy discovered on the site. I posted another photo, DSC 0219, in HFF from the Storm King Art Center, a great outdoor art space, about 100 km north of New York City.

I suppose a railing is a type of fence. The Texas State Capitol Building in Austin, Texas, was built in 1888 and modified in 1955, 1995, and 1997. It was modeled after the U,S. Capitol but is about 5 meters taller. It has more floor space than any other state capitol building in the United States. Everything in Texas is bigger. :-) It houses the Legislature and the Governor's offices.

Governors Island is a 70-hectare island in New York harbor. For a long time, it was the home for military bases. In 1774, there was colonial militia base on the island, later there was a U.S. Army base, and finally a Coast Guard base. The Coast Guard base closed in 1996, In 2003, the island was transferred to to the State and City of New York, and a part was made into a National Monument. Part of the island was opened as a park in 2014 and the rest in 2016.

I hope this is close enough to be a fence. It's of the interior of a bicycle/pedestrian bridge, called "Rattlesnake Bridge," over a major street leading into downtown Tucson, Arizona. On the outside, it looks like a rattlesnake. On the day I was there, I waited for about 30 minutes, hoping to include a bicycle or pedestrian in the photo, but nobody came by. It was built in 2002 and is iconic because it is so visible when driving below, but it is rarely used as a bridge.
