Ashridge Estate ~ Another old photo :-)))

"Ashridge is a country estate in Hertfordshire, England. It is situated in the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Berkhamsted and 23 miles (37 km) north west of London. The estate comprises 5,000 acres (20 km2) of woodlands (known as Ashridge Forest), commons and chalk downland which supports a rich variety of wildlife".

Possibly best viewed Large :-)

Swanage Pier

Swanage Pier is a Victorian pier which extends into the southern end of Swanage Bay near the town of Swanage, in the south-east of Dorset. It was built in 1895 for passenger ship services. It is situated on the eastern coast of the Isle of Purbeck, approximately 6 miles south of Poole in the United Kingdom.

Croome Court, Worcestershire.

"Croome Court is a mid-18th-century Neo-Palladian mansion surrounded by extensive landscaped parkland at Croome D'Abitot, near Upton-upon-Severn in south Worcestershire, England. The mansion and park were designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown for George Coventry, 6th Earl of Coventry, and they were Brown's first landscape design and first major architectural project. Stowe Gardens { Quite an old photo :-) }

"Stowe Gardens, formerly Stowe Landscape Gardens, are extensive Grade I listed gardens and parkland in Buckinghamshire, England. Largely created in the 18th century, the gardens at Stowe are arguably the most significant example of the English landscape garden. Designed by Charles Bridgeman, William Kent, and Capability Brown, the gardens changed from a baroque park to a natural landscape garden, commissioned by the estate's owners, in particular by Richard Temple, 1st Viscount Cobham, his nephew Richard Grenville-Temple, 2nd Earl Temple, and his nephew George Nugent-Temple-Grenville, 1st Marquess of Buckingham.

The gardens are notable for the scale, design, size and the number of monuments set across the landscape, as well as for the fact they have been a tourist attraction for over 300 years. Many of the monuments in the property have their own additional Grade I listing along with the park. Was struggling to find a photo for Happy Fence Friday so have been back into the Archives and found a photo from 2024.

This is Croome Estate in Worcestershire, England. Hiding amongst the bushes and trees is Croome Court, a mid-18th-century Neo-Palladian mansion.

The mansion and park were designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown.

This photo does have a bit of fence near the house :-)

I have re-worked this very, very, very old photo :-)) It is the Radcliffe Camera in Oxford and there really is a fence surrounding the grass :-)) The photo was taken from near the top of the University Church.

On the left is part of Brasenose College. And, also on the left towards the background is part of the Bodleian Library and the top of the Sheldonian Theatre.

I have also decided upon a very obscure link for Sight & Sound. In the context of the The Radcliffe Camera, 'Camera' means "Reading Room". But for the purposes of 'Sight and Sound' a 'Camera' is for taking photographs. I have, therefore, chosen "Take A Picture of This" by Don Henley :-))

I am not sure if the first building here, in Merton Street, is a private residence or, maybe, a building used by Oxford University.

The centrepiece of Merton Street is Merton College, founded in 1264. But Merton College is on the opposite side of the road. So, whether this building has any connection to Merton College I don't know :-) I will have to check things out on my next visit, I think :-)

The building on the left is The Freud café-bar

"The Freud café-bar stands opposite the Oxford University Press, and at the head of Great Clarendon Street. The bar, which was opened in 1988, is housed in a grand neoclassical building with an Ionic portico.This building was constructed as the Church of St Paul, the first Anglican parish church to be constructed in Oxford after the Reformation.The new church and parish was created to serve the growing community of Jericho. The building was designed by the architect H. J. Underwood and built in 1836. The architect E. G. Bruton added the apse in 1853 and F. C. Eden remodelled the interior in 1908. In the 20th century St Paul's became a redundant church and, after de-consecration, became a theatre and arts centre. In 1988 the building was acquired by Secession Ltd. to prevent its demolition and opened as Freud café-bar".

The building on the right is the Blavatnik School of Government.
