A visit to Roundhay Park and the victorian Upper Lake bandstand. It was built as such but given the seating arrangement it's probably more of a shelter today.

Often mistaken for Leicester castle because of its medieval-looking castellated frontage this is actually Leicester Category B Prison on Welford Road opened in 1828! The real Leicester Castle dates from 1068 becoming a royal residence in the 14th & 15th century but only the Great Hall survives today and it's not here! The Tigers Rugby stadium is visible far right BTW.

The journalist William Cobbett, who wrote about his journeys around England in the early 19th century, criticised the people of Leicester for being proud of their new prison, feeling that it would be more praiseworthy to have an absence of crime!

The last public execution at Leicester Prison took place on 25 July 1856, when an estimated crowd of 25,000 gathered to watch the hanging in front of this gatehouse.

Chichester cathedral was consecrated in 1108 and following a disastrous fire was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1199. The spire was built in 1402 but collapsed in 1861 due to subsidence and was rebuilt. The cathedral spire is the third tallest in England and acts as a landmark for travellers.

Blue skies and summer clouds over Bradgate Park.

Formerly the estate of the Greys of Groby (including Queen Lady Jane Grey), the grounds of Bradgate House have been a public park since the 1920s when the then owner, Charles Bennion, bequeathed it in perpetuity to "the people of Leicestershire".

It's been a deer park even longer.

The entrance to the Garganta de Gata gorge. The bridge over the road carries the Alicante-Denia metre gauge line opened in 1911. It has been upgraded over the last decade by FGV reopening throughout in 2023.

I was amazed you can get so close to this family of swans on the nest in Roundhay Park. The fence wouldn't keep them in or passers-by out.

As a child I was always told to keep well away from swans. They could break your arm with their wings my mother said & were especially dangerous when they were protecting their young. These beauties were almost in touching distance from the path and didn't even blink as people passed by!

Attracted to the lights! Silhouettes in the tunnel that runs from Calke Abbey to the brewhouse.

The site was an Augustinian priory from the 12th century until its dissolution by Henry VIII. The present building, named Calke Abbey in 1808, was never actually an abbey but is a Baroque mansion built between 1701 and 1704.

Kinver Edge is a high sandstone ridge and hill fort which overlooks the dramatic red sandstone rock houses.

These homes were carved into friable Permian-aged dune sandstone probably in the 17-18th century. The restored Holy Austin houses are now owned by the National Trust & show how life was lived in the rock until the 1960s. With a tea room on top it's a great place to sit and admire the view.

The impressive colonial era porte cochere of the Eravati Sule Grand hotel on Strand Road in Rangoon/Yangon.

It was originally constructed in 1927 as the New Law Courts by architect Thomas Oliphant and Doorman Long UK. Formerly the Rosewood Hotel the property has been restored and reopened as the Eravati Sule in 2025.

Steam on the Chinese main lines was still commonplace way back in autumn 1983 & I spent 3 weeks on a Railway Transport & Photography tour savouring it.

These China Railways QJ 2-10-2 locomotives add their contributions to the general early morning fug hanging over Harbin engine shed as they are prepared for the road.

A wall of Chalk! The white cliffs of Le Tréport taken from the beach at Mers.

The 1908 funicular railway from Tréport to the Terrace on the Chalk clifftop can be seen entering the tunnels in the centre.
