Menorca: Sa Mesquida—The view from the old casemate. This bunker dates from the Spanish Civil War. It is so small and cramped, one had to crawl inside and lay on the belly while observing and defending the bay. I did the same to get this shot :)

The photo on the left was taken from the "balcony" shown on top of the photo on the right (and on the enlarged background behind it). Both pictures were taken a couple of hours apart, hence the different colors.

Menorca: Pedreres de s'Hostal—in the foreground, Pedrera del Trencador (Quarryman's Quarry); the person in the middle of the picture is going to another section of these quarries, the Pedrera del Laberint (Labyrinth Quarry). When I am in a good mood, one day, I will upload a picture of that one :) In the distance, the Cantera San Esteban.

There used to be hundreds of sandstone—marés in the local vernacular—quarries on the island. Today, only three active quarries remain: the San Esteban Quarry and the Son Salord Quarry, both located in the Ciutadella municipality, and the S'Algar Quarry around Sant Lluís. The San Esteban Quarry is set to close in a couple of years and the S'Algar Quarry is also in the process of shutting down. This decline in sandstone quarrying is due to the adoption of cinder blocks in the construction industry.

The lighthouse was built in 1912 after the shipwreck in 1910 of the French steamship Général Chanzy, which cost the lives of all the crew and passengers except one. The lighthouse became operational in 1913. It was inhabited until the second half of the 20th century.
The structure in the foreground is one of two bunkers built during the Spanish Civil War.
