Mein ca. 1,80 m großer Säulenkaktus, der im Hauskeller den Winter überdauert und im Sommer im Garten steht, hat dieses Jahr sechs Blütenknospen. Im Laufe der letzten Tage sind alle aufgeblüht. Die Blütenöffnung erfolgt in der Dämmerung und bis zur Morgendämmerung ist die Blüte vorbei. Das Foto machte im letzten Sonnenlicht. Der Blütendurchmesser beträgt ca. 15 cm.

Over the past few days, all of them have opened. The flowers open at dusk, and by dawn they are already finished. I took the photo in the last sunlight. The flower is approximately 15 cm in diameter.

Diese wirklich am ganzen Körper knallrote Feuerlibelle (Crocothemis erythraea) fand ich kürzlich zum ersten Mal in der Nähe eines Weinbergs. Feuerlibellen sind ursprünglich in den warmen Regionen Südeuropas, Afrikas und Vorderasiens beheimatet und wanderten gelegentlich in warmen Sommern bis nach Mitteleuropa. Seit den 1990er-Jahren hat sich die Art in Mitteleuropa "festgesetzt" und wird immer wieder in Deutschland beobachtet. In Süddeutschland ist sie inzwischen nicht selten. Mittlerweile kommt sie sogar in Norddeutschland vor.
Achtung: Sie kann mit roten Heidelibellen-Arten verwechselt werden.

Scarlet Dragon flies are originally native to the warm regions of southern Europe, Africa, and Western Asia, and in warm summers they occasionally migrated as far as Central Europe. Since the 1990s, the species has become established in Central Europe and is regularly observed in Germany. In southern Germany it is now fairly common, and it even occurs in northern Germany today.
Please note: It can be confused with red sympetrum species.

Das Würzburger Tor in Thüngersheim am Main wurde 1751 erbaut. Der überörtliche Verkehr floss früher durch das Würzburger Tor und den historischen Altort von Thüngersheim. Bevor die heutige Bundesstraße B 27 und die davor genutzte Staatsstraße außerhalb des Ortskerns verliefen, war die enge Hauptachse des Dorfes der zentrale Verkehrsweg für Fuhrwerke, Postkutschen und den frühen Automobilverkehr. Welche Erleichterung für die Bewohner als die Ortsumgehung ferig gestellt war (1980)!

The Würzburg Gate in Thüngersheim on the Main River was built in 1751. In earlier times, interregional traffic passed through the Würzburg Gate and the historic old center of Thüngersheim. Before today’s federal road B 27 — and the state road used before it — were routed outside the village core, the narrow main axis of the village served as the central traffic route for wagons, stagecoaches, and early automobile traffic. What a relief it was for the residents when the bypass was completed in 1980.

Diesen Segelfalter (Iphiclides podalirius) fand ich auf einer Luzernenwiese in der Nähe meines Heimatortes. Bei genauerem Hinsehen sieht man, dass das rechte "Schwänzchen" und ein Teil des rechten Hinterflügels fehlt, also abgepickt wurde. Der Falter hat wahrscheinlich den Angriff eines Vogels überlebt. Segelfalter gelten als die schönsten europäischen Tagfalter. Sie waren in den vergangenen Jahren als sehr bedroht eingestuft. Inzwischen habe sich aber z.B. in Franken stellenweise stabile Populationen gebildet. Eine erfreuliche Entwicklung.

I found this Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius) in an alfalfa meadow near my hometown. On closer inspection you can see that the right “tail” and part of the right hindwing are missing, clearly pecked off. So the butterfly survived a bird attack. Scarce Swallowtails are considered the most beautiful Europea butterflies. In recent years they were classified as highly endangered. In the meantime, however, stable populations have formed in some regions, for example in Franconia. A pleasing development.

Bei mir im Garten gefunden: Ein prächtiges Weibchen vom Hauhechel-Bläuling (Polyommatus icarus), einer bei uns häufigen Bläulingsart, die von April bis Oktober fliegt und pro Jahr bis zu 3 Generationen ausbildet. Die Männchen sind auf der Unterseite im Grundton leicht grau gefärbt. Der Schmetterling im Bild saugt an einer Blüte der Färberkamille (Cota tinctoria), die im Moment blüht.

Found in my garden: a magnificent female Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus), a butterfly species that is widespread here, flying from April to October and producing up to three generations per year. The males show a slightly greyish ground tone on the underside. The butterfly in the photo is feeding on a blossom of Golden Marguerite (Cota tinctoria), which is currently in bloom.

In extremer Mittagshitze fand ich diesen Geißklee-Bläuling (Plebejus argus), wahrscheinlich ein Männchen. In Deutschland gilt diese hübsche Falterart gemäß der Roten Liste als gefährdet.

Bei einer Wanderung lief mir diese auffällig grün gefärbte Raupe des Kleinen Nachtpfauenauges (Saturnia pavonia) über den Weg. Sie wurde gerade von einer Ameise inspiziert, ob sie als Futter verwendet werden könnte. Aus der grünen Raupe entsteht nach der Verpuppung ein wunderschöner Nachtfalter (siehe Wikipedia).

Whilst out walking, I came across this strikingly green caterpillar of the Small Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia). It was being inspected by an ant, which was checking whether it might be suitable as food. After pupation, the green caterpillar emerges as a beautiful moth (see Wikipedia).

Dieser kleine Bläuling, nämlich der Pflaumen Zipfelfalter (Satyrium pruni) tauchte kürzlich in meinem Garten auf, um an Blüten des Gewöhnliche Pfeifenstrauchs (Philadelphus coronarius) zu naschen. Die Raupen des Pflaumen-Zipfelfaltersfressen nach dem Schlüpfen im Spätwinter zunächst Blütenknospen, dann die Blüten und später die Blätter von Schlehensträuchern (und auch Zwetschgenbäumen). Der Falter fliegt sehr schnell und ist wegen seiner Färbung sehr unauffällig. Er gilt als gefährdet.

This little blue butterfly, namely the black hairstreak (Satyrium pruni), recently turned up in my garden to feast on the flowers of the Sweet Mock Orange (Philadelphus coronarius). After hatching in late winter, the caterpillars of the black hairstreak first feed on flower buds, then on the flowers, and later on the leaves of blackthorn bushes (and also plum trees). The butterfly flies very quickly and is very inconspicuous due to its colouring. It is considered to be endangered.

An einem schmalen Bachlauf war dieses Männchen der Blauflügel-Prachtlibelle (Calopteryx virgo) auf Insektenjagd und setzte sich auf ein Schilfblatt als Warte. Vorbeifliegende Beute wurde von hier aus sofort angegriffen. Mittlerweile wird diese Libellenart nicht mehr als gefährdet eingestuft.

By a narrow stream, this male Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopteryx virgo) was hunting for insects and perched on a reed leaf to lie in wait. Prey flying past was immediately attacked from this vantage point. This species of Calopteryx is no longer classified as endangered.

Gerade noch rechtzeitig vor dem Ende der Blühsaison konnte ich vom Türkenbund (Lilium martagon) eine Aufnahme machen. Man sieht neben der wunderschönen Blüte eine bereits verwelkte (links) und oben sich bildende Fruchtstände. Die Aufnahme entstand in einem fränkischen Laubmischwald.
Der Türkenbund gilt in Deutschland nicht als gefährdet, ist jedoch nach der Bundesartenschutzverordnung besonders geschützt. Wie alle Liliengewächse ist der Türkenbund hochgiftig besonders für Katzen.

Just in time before the end of the flowering season, I managed to take a photograph of the martagon lily (Lilium martagon). Alongside the beautiful flower, you can see one that has already wilted (on the left) and fruit clusters forming at the top. The photograph was taken in a mixed deciduous forest in Franconia.
The martagon lily is not considered endangered in Germany, but is specially protected under the Federal Species Protection Ordinance. Like all members of the lily family, the martagon lily is highly toxic, particularly to cats.

Ein winziger Tagfalter setzte sich bei einer Rast während einer Wanderung auf den Rand meiner Wanderhose. Ich konnte gerade noch ein Bild machen. Es handelte sich um den Zwerg-Bläuling (Cupido minimus), den kleinesten Tagfalter Mitteleuropas, den ich bislang noch nie gesehen hatte. Er fällt wegen seiner sehr geringen Größe fast nicht auf. Er ist recht selten und steht auf der Vorwarnliste der Roten Liste Deutschland.

A tiny butterfly landed on the hem of my hiking trousers whilst I was taking a break during a walk. I just managed to snap a photo. It was the Small Blue (Cupido minimus), the smallest diurnal Butterfly in Central Europe, which I had never seen before. It is almost impossible to spot due to its very small size. It is quite rare and is on the early warning list of the German Red List.

Diese abgeblüten Blütenstände vom Wiesen-Bocksbart (Tragopogon pratensis) fand ich am Straßenrand. Da der Fruchtstand sehr viel größer ist als beim Löwenzahn, kann man beide Pflanzen eigentlich nicht verwechseln. Alle Teile des Wiesenbocksbarts sind essbar. In der Türkei ist er als Yemlik bekannt und wird gerne als Salat verzehrt.

As the fruit head is much larger than that of the dandelion, it is actually impossible to confuse the two plants. All parts of the meadow goat’s-beard are edible. In Turkey, it is known as ‘yemlik’ and is often eaten in salads.

Häufig besuchte ich in den letzten Jahren ohne Erfolg einen Weiher in der Nähe, in dem sich die Ringelnatter (Natrix natrix) aufhalten soll. Gestern bei warmem Wetter und Sonnenschein konnte ich in den Nachmittagsstunden ein großes erwachsenes Tier (siehe Foto und PiP)) und mehrere Jungtiere beobachten. Welch ein Erlebnis. Die Ringelnatter zählt nach der aktuellen Roten Liste Deutschland zu den gefährdeten Tieren und ist nach dem Bundesartenschutzgesetz streng geschützt.

Over the last few years, I have often visited a nearby pond where the grass snake (Natrix natrix) is said to live, but without success. Yesterday, in warm, sunny weather, I was able to spot a large adult (see photo and PiP) and several juveniles during the afternoon. What an experience. According to the current German Red List, the grass snake is classified as an endangered species and is strictly protected under the Federal Species Protection Act.
