Overnight on April 3rd into the day on April 4th nearly two feet of heavy, wet snow fell. The area was thrown into chaos as trees toppled on power lines and fell across roads, snapped limbs and wires were everywhere. A surge of tree service and utility workers flooded the state in the aftermath, working tirelessly to clear roads and restore electricity. Warm temperatures followed, and within 24 hours the snowpack melted nearly six inches. Within a week it was like it had never happened, except for the masses of limbs and cut up trees that are currently piled along roadways.

This morning a fox suddenly raced into the pasture, and attempted to run down one of the grey squirrels that were eating the crow food I put out. It was quite a show, and the fox didn't go home hungry. It stayed for a while and cleaned up the crow food, too. (crow food=soaked cat kibble, seeds, dried fruit, nuts) Fox used to be abundant in our area but I think the growing coyote population has pushed them out. It was wonderful to see this healthy animal, and it even came back later in the evening to snack some more.

You know it's coming, but it's always a little depressing when it gets here. Winter is a long, colorless, barren season. I suppose it does help to have a break and plan for the next year, though.

What a summer. I've built (not exactly finished, though) two gravel patios, a small water feature, opened up the forest a bit, re-fenced and spruced my gardens, and a million other little things that add up to overall improvement of my space. Sometimes I get so caught up in my frenzy to build my paradise that I forget to stop and actually enjoy it.
