This is a tribute (a very poor tribute) to Jay Maisel, a photographer and writer who died this month aged 95. He wasn’t the best known photographer, but many will know one of his most famous works - the cover of the Miles Davis album “Kind of Blue”. His pictures, his articles and books (particularly “Light, Gesture and Color”) show a grasp of picture-making that is almost incomparable, but which offer a guide to all those who carry a camera. To me he ranks alongside Saul Leiter and Fred Herzog as the seminal figures in the photographic pantheon and over the years he has taught me so much.

Thank you, Laura, for hosting this World Photography Day event. This picture is taken from the inside of the art gallery at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre, a place I visit frequently. The photo doesn’t really reflect my favourite photographers: Saul Leiter, Fred Herzog, Harry Callahan or Todd Hido; although Todd Hido’s dictum to “photograph like a documentarian and print like a painter” is one that is often in the forefront of my mind when the camera is in my hand. I’m attracted to shadows, to buildings and to details.

Sorry this was a late submission. Real life got in the way.

May I wish you all a delightful and Happy Wednesday. The sea wall is new, replacing dunes which sloped from the path to the beach. It looks pretty enough, but I miss the casual nature of its predecessor. The sky is that wonderful winter hue which we get in this part of WA.
