Happy World Photography Day! Photographer I admire: Sally Mann

I have so many photographers whose work I admire that choosing one for this event has been difficult. Because I chose an image of a member of my extended family (grandaughter), I have gone with Sally Mann. She isn't actually someone whose work I would want to copy exactly in style, as she tends a bit more towards the odd than my visual eye, however, her work does inspire me in many ways. Being unafraid to take a photo that may not be considered "beautiful" or doesn't follow stark rules about what a photo is supposed to be like. I guess mostly having a clear idea of what she wants to be doing and going for it is a large part of what I admire in her work. It is a quality that I continually strive for.

One thing about this image of mine that makes me think of Sally Mann is the decision to include the random objects behind my grandaughter instead of cropping the image and cropping them out. Leaving them in shifts the photo from a straight portrait to more of a scene of family life.

Happily I also got to spend time with my other grandchild on World Photography Day. He is 3 1/2 years old, but I let him use my mini polaroid camera and so he also participated. I let him keep the images he took, so none here to show (and there's only supposed to be one anyway), but know that he did make me make a silly face the photo he took of me. *smile*

This makes me laugh - apparently a large portion of ipernity users don't like stating a preference for anything! Many people wouldn't even say what photographer they enjoy/admire for World Photography Day - and here, just as many people voted for the diptych as couldn't decide or chose not to even think about it.
The funny part is that one reason I asked for other peoples opinion is because I couldn't pick! So I join that crowd.

My husband, who has a lot of sway with me, voted for B, the sepia-ish version. He is a very decisive person in general. I continue to go back and forth, though I agree with a few people here that B stands well on its own, but that the diptych adds something. I'm going to bring it down to if I decide to show this in print somewhere, looking at prints will make it possible to decide!

And for those of you who check all details on photo pages and see 'Address: Petting Zoo' - that is not wrong. This flower was at our local zoo. The zoo has great plants, a lot of natives and also many flowers.

Easter for me is a day to connect with loved ones. We can't always do it in person, but we always make a Dutch Baby for brunch.

Space travel looms large in our household, so hearing the NASA astronauts wish us a Happy Easter with a reminder that among different religion it is love that matters, made our day!

The wind up is a toy that was around even before the first lunar exploration 50 years ago. It needs a little help these days to get going, but I understand that completely.

Inside the Dimbola Museum and Galleries on the Isle of Wight which was at one time Julia Margaret Cameron Home from 1860 to 1875. While they now show her images and contemporary photographers, her home is filled with all sorts of interesting things including wall paper by William Morris who lived nearby at Kelmscot Manor near the end of her being at Dimbola.

Just a few snapshots for reference. Not to show off the photos since there are reflections all over the place (in person one can avoid the reflecctions). Artist statement here shows a photo of my mom and myself, her painting in a sweater in the 60's (a sweater I still own) and myself at her house with camera in hand. Title of the show: FOCUS "My mom, Joyce Lee Fletcher, taught me to look for the most interesting detail and to focus on that. This show is dedicated to her." Below that a Calvin and Hobbes comic strip making fun of artist statements. My mom always had a joke ready, so this statement needed one. That's one of her paintings above the statement.

Located at Cassidy's Restaurant, an old time Portland establishment with great house made food and wonderful wooden bar, where Bob, the owner, has art up from local artists year round. Here he is at the bar, and friend and fellow artist is helping prep some snacks. My husband sits after helping with the placement of the photos:

Placed all over the restaurant (in the back room are some paintings by said friend - room not used most of the time so none of my images back there):

Opening was wonderful. Can you guess which 3 framed images sold at the opening? I also sold some unframed images that I had in a book. I was thrilled.
