As it happens, I am often at a loss for words when it comes to relating my thoughts and feelings about a given subject. It is perhaps because I consider myself to be a person with a concentration of acute visual aesthetics, rather than that of the written word. So looking at the expression of a photograph such as the one before you, makes one feel in a certain way, yet should I try to express this feeling in words, I risk failing its impact on the viewer, to fall short of the true message expressed by the image itself.

When an image is complex in design and content, words can add to its meaning and help the viewer to better understand the artist’s intended expression. However, when words cannot do justice to the art, it is best left wordless of description, leaving the image open to interpretation by the viewer to react, hopefully in an emotional way.

Milena — From the Kitchen Sessions

The kitchen sessions were special. This one in particular. I used natural sunlight streaming in through the window. The only fill was the reflecting light from the side of the counter. Not that Milena, needed it, but the light really heightened the sense of softness of her naked skin. Bathed in this light, the contours of her body were brought out in their exquisiteness. Where normally a shot against the bright light would produce a silhouette, in this case it merely brought out the warmth of this lovely model. Her eyes and expression completed this provocative image.

Two weekends ago I discovered that I am pregnant,
two blue stripes beacon to change my world forever;
a simple prelude to the infinitely complex phenomenon of life.
My eyes smile at me in the mirror, with excitement, questions and incredulity,
I put my hand on my belly and laugh “am I really going to have a baby?”
Me, I, we? Yes. How amazing. How wonderful.
Smoking stops, drinking stops, old life stops…life starts,
how great it feels to get over my weaknesses,
as I am acting instinctively on what's best for our child,
our child is, without knowing, prompting what is best for me.

Mood and attitude are the two components that I try to convey with each image. In this image I have well achieved both. I especially am happy with the background which is an art piece created by my wife and artist Mary Bogdan. It is called "Playing Battle Dress Up." I don't want to take away any attention from my model, but the art behind her is one of Mary's most controversial pieces amongst many. She certainly makes us want to take a closer look.

Somewhere in time we came to learn the visual iconography and meaning of pregnancy. It is an image that we have come to know and that has become very much a part of our visual language. It expresses femininity in a different and tender way. Beyond raw erotica, a pregnant woman, although still looking very attractive, possibly even considered sexy by some, evokes tenderness and emotion that, like art itself, is representative of creation and all manner of Godliness. Womankind, Eve, Sarah, Mary, all have been represented in art as the matriarchs of our (western) civilization. I take no credit for creating, but rather being the conduit, the messenger, so-to-speak, of these understandings, through my photographic art. I am only responsible for having well observed the art that has passed before me. Having developed an aesthetic that is learned and eventually mimicked by me in the creation of my “original” imagery.

Several weeks have passed since the warmth of her gaze fuelled my creative juices. Luckily her inspirational eyes have been captured digitally to be the raw fodder in my possession where I practise my craft and immortalize them for eternity. One can lose oneself in their hypnotic power, never to be the same, ever again. It is the stuff of legends. Although in this fast paced enlightened skeptical age, legends are not so easily made. But one tries just the same. It is the need to leave a legacy after death. Something that we want to be remembered for. Either for its creation or its existence. So I present Milena’s eyes. If you lose your way while staring into them, do try to awaken from your fantasy, eventually. One must not dream their life away.

When writing about my photographs I often weave in and out between writing about my model specifically, women in general and my own point of view of women or my photography as the art form that I have chosen to portray my subjects in. One thing is usually obvious to most who view these photographs. And that is that I bestow the ultimate respect upon the women who have entrusted me with their vulnerability of nude or semi-nude posing. They have exposed themselves to my lens and have offered their ultimate expression of erotica. The intended pose as well as the resulting photograph, both are with an end to provoke and arouse the imagination of the viewer. Elise and I both hope that we have done justice to this mission.

Milena's Studio Visit

It’s all starting to feel a bit too much. Flickr, Ipernity, Zivity, Facebook, my blog, my website, YouTube, DailyMotion… where, when will it end? The Internet is such an avalanche of information constantly coming at me and at the same time always beckoning for more content. As a content provider, I have been working hard to create images with praise as the only reward. God knows I have been getting a whole lot of that. More than I have ever imagined that I would. But I have grown tired. The rewards are fulfilling, emotionally, but as an artist, I find that I need greater validation. Perhaps financial reward, of which I see very little through this venue. Thank God for the graphic design career. It is what provides for sustenance. But I also feel responsibility to express myself and to put out a message that I feel is needed in this world of ours. To offer yet another voice that speaks to the conscience of humanity. To strive for the betterment of all. I believe this is the primary responsibility of the artist of today. So I go on to produce and present and exhibit.
