The 'impossible' wrasse

nobody@ipernity.com (SuperMarina) — Sun, 08 Dec 2019 04:19:23 +0000

I don't know how much time and energy I've spent trying to get a shot of these guys that at least is almost in focus, but it is considerable. In the old days (meaning before November this year) I used a Nikon AW1, which is convenient and waterproof, but has relatively slow autofocus and a tiny little sensor. So I've considered buying a housing for my D500 for a while, thinking that would improve the odds.
In the end I bought a housing for the Z6 since it has a larger sensor and better resolution. The results still don't impress but the image quality is better now.

Yellowtail Damsel

Very young Yellowtail Damsels have more spectacular colors than the adults, but they are almost impossible to photograph so I gave up and tried an adult instead. After color-correcting the image the spots ended up looking far more purple than they appear in reality.

I've been trying to compare the AF tracking on my D500 and the Z6; this is the Z6 being just a bit behind (I wanted it to keep the bird's eyes in focus).
Of course, the D500 didn't do much better despite slightly faster AF. Still, the main problem is that I can't track the birds; my cameras are far better than I could ever be!

At one time I thought I might be able to shoot wildlife with my 500mm mirror lens. After trying I realized this was not realistic.
But the ring bokeh typical of mirror lenses would look really cool in shots of birds flying over water, so I faked it.
To create this image, which a single shot with a mirror lens could have done if mirror lenses were sharp, required two professional cameras, two RAW images in four layers, and about an hour fiddling around in Photoshop.
