PhLB - Luc Boonen has started a discussion:

Dear Sunday Storytellers,

After part 2 we now arrive at part 3!

If 1. Subject answers “Who or what am I looking at?” and
2. Context answers “Where are we, and what surrounds the subject?”, then 3:

Moment answers:

“What is happening right now—and what does this moment make me anticipate?”

3. Moment — the photograph’s action
The moment is the point in time you choose to freeze. It can be an obvious action—a runner jumping, a child laughing, a person opening a door—but it can also be incredibly subtle: a glance, a hesitation, a hand reaching, a change in posture, or the instant before something happens.

This is where a photograph begins to feel like a story rather than a description.

Imagine a photograph of a woman sitting at a train station.
• Subject: a woman.
• Context: a train station, perhaps with platforms, signs, and other passengers.
• Moment: she is looking toward an approaching train while gripping a small suitcase.

Suddenly, we have a question:
Is she leaving? Is she waiting for someone? Is she late? Is she saying goodbye?
The photograph doesn't need to answer those questions. In fact, it can be more powerful when it doesn't.

The power of the "before and after"
A strong storytelling moment often contains an implied before and after.
You don't photograph the whole event. You photograph the fraction of a second that allows the viewer to imagine what came before and what might happen next.
The photograph freezes the middle, but the viewer mentally supplies the rest.
That's why anticipation is such an important part of photographic storytelling.

Look for transitions. Some of the richest moments occur when something is changing:
• someone is about to enter or leave
• a person is deciding something
• an interaction is beginning or ending
• someone moves from light into shadow
• a child stops playing and notices something
• a crowd suddenly reacts
• an expression changes
• a person reaches for something
• two people almost touch
• someone looks away

These are story moments because they contain tension or possibility.
Subject tells us who.
Context tells us where and under what circumstances.
Moment tells us what is unfolding.
And that third element is often what turns a photograph from “a picture of something” into “a moment from a story.”

That's a lot to read, now is the time to give it a try.
Have fun,

See you next Sunday!

PhLB - Luc Boonen has started a discussion:

Dear fellow Sunday Challenge members,

Thank you for all your contributions on minimal photography, as example for Subject in Storytelling.
Next week Storytelling continues with Context.
Let's have closer look.

Context is one of the most powerful storytelling tools in photography because it answers the question: "What is happening beyond the subject?" A portrait can tell you who someone is, but context helps explain where they are, what they're doing, why it matters, and how you should feel about it.

Think of context as the information surrounding your main subject that gives the image meaning.

What context does in a photograph
1. It establishes the setting. The environment tells the viewer where the story takes place.

Imagine a woman sitting on a bench. Without context: It's simply a portrait.
With a train station in the background: She might be waiting for someone.
With a hospital hallway: The emotional interpretation changes entirely.
The same subject becomes a different story.

2. It explains relationships. Context shows how subjects relate to each other.

For example: A child holding an old man's hand.
Without context: It could be a random moment.
With context:
They're walking through a cemetery.
They're crossing a busy street.
They're entering a birthday party.
Each setting changes the narrative.

3. It reveals time. Context can communicate:
season
time of day
historical period
stage of life

A portrait in warm autumn light tells a different story than the same portrait under fluorescent office lighting.
Even small details like clothing, weather, architecture, or technology help viewers place the image in time.

4. It provides emotional clues. People naturally look for visual cues.
A person's expression might be neutral, but the surroundings shape how we interpret it.
For example:
Someone looking down.
In a celebration: maybe overwhelmed with joy.
In a hospital: worried.
In a courtroom: anxious.
In a classroom: concentrating.
The environment influences emotion.

5. It creates questions. Good storytelling doesn't explain everything.
Context should make viewers curious.

For example:
A single shoe on an empty road.
A child looking through a broken window.
An umbrella left open in sunshine.
These details create mystery without spelling out the answer.

Types of context
Environmental context. Shows where the story happens.
Examples: home / workplace / street / forest /factory
Environmental portraits rely heavily on this.

Social context. Shows how people interact.
Examples: family dinner / protest / wedding / classroom / sports event
Relationships often become the story.

Cultural context. Objects, clothing, symbols, architecture, and traditions communicate culture.
Examples: traditional dress / religious ceremonies / local markets / festivals
These elements add layers of meaning.

Visual context. Composition itself creates context.
Think about: foreground / background / framing / reflections /shadows / leading lines
These elements can reveal or conceal information.

How much context is enough?
This is a creative choice.

Too little. A tight headshot may hide everything except expression.
Good for: mystery / emotion / abstraction
Poor for: documentary storytelling
Too much. A cluttered background competes with the subject. The viewer doesn't know where to look.
Just enough. The subject is clearly dominant, but enough surrounding information supports the story. Photojournalists often aim for this balance.

I can't wait to see your contributions,
have a nice week,
see you next Sunday,

PhLB - Luc Boonen has started a discussion:

Hi all,

Thank you Gillian for your efforts during May and July. I carry the torch on from here.

The next month we will have a closer look at storytelling in photography.

Before pressing the shutter, consider these four questions:
1. Who is the story about? (Subject)
2. Where is it happening? (Context)
3. What is happening right now? (Moment)
4. Why should someone care? (Emotion)

When all four are present, a photograph is much more likely to communicate a story that viewers can understand and remember.

First we deal with the subject - Let's use minimalism for this.

Minimalism can strengthen each of the four storytelling elements by removing distractions and directing the viewer's attention to what matters most.
The key is that minimalism isn't about having less for its own sake—it's about being intentional with every element in the frame.

Minimalism contributes to underline the subject. It simplifies the composition so the subject becomes unmistakably clear. Negative space, clean backgrounds, and limited visual clutter make the subject the immediate focal point.

Question 2,3 and 4 will be scheduled during the rest of the month.

Have fun,

See you all next week!

Any subject:
Post your new photo as the main photo,
and display the archive below it.

OR it can be a diptych.
OR multiple photos in a collage/collection.

AI Overview
"Then and now" photography juxtaposes a vintage/older photo with a modern shot of the same subject to highlight the passage of time. Common examples include cityscapes showing urban development, landscapes revealing environmental changes, and "recreated" personal portraits

Have fun, regards Gillian

Esther has started a discussion:

This week's challenge is April 17, 2026 - SC 193 - AI in Action. I am not fond of AI images. However, since AI is everywhere these days, this is an opportunity to learn a little about what it can do and how it can mimic a photograph, complete with realistic shadows and lighting. Go to ChatGPT.com, Gemini.Google.com or any AI creative site that you like and create an image that looks like a photograph but clearly is not because of a whimsical additive.

You can start your AI prompt with something like, "create a picture that looks like an actual photograph of . . . " or something similar.

For example, the following prompt was used on two different sites:

"create a picture that looks like a 6 x 4 photograph of Santa Clause and his reindeer flying across the lunar surface with the earth in the background."

Here's what Google Gemini produced: gemini.google.com/app/3ed02183fcaedd6a?is_sa=1&is_sa=1&android-min-version=301356232&ios-min-version=322.0&campaign_id=skws&utm_source=sem&utm_medium=paid-media&utm_campaign=skws&pt=9008&mt=8&ct=p-growth-sem-skws&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22748924156&gbraid=0AAAAApk5BhlrSmYFu9dQHpH2iaBojaAvH&gclid=Cj0KCQjwkMjOBhC5ARIsADIdb3dvBVBcMkJGocF2fzNDf5RCs9Zl9poNxKLp672Fk-crBXVqqhL-4Q4aAkcjEALw_wcB

Chat GPT produced an even better image using the same prompt.

Remember to add something whimsical to distinguish it from reality, such as an elf in a street scene, a zebra flying over a waterfall or a committee of buzzards in Times Square. The more detailed your description, the more of your own creativity you add to your image. Do not use any copyrighted images such as superheroes, cartoon characters or famous personalities. Experiment with camera effects, such as black and white or sepia if you so desire. And most importantly, mark each image as being a creation of AI.

If you are truly opposed to doing anything with AI, you can take an actual photograph and include a whimsical element.
