I hope every interest member joins this group and presents clear, concise ideas that can be acted upon in the very near future.
Most importantly while people take precautions such as saving photos, I urge everyone to keep their accounts (even if less active) otherwise it would be a shame if we did manage to find a way to save Ipernity with nothing left to save.

New Threat to Photographic Freedom

William Sutherland has started a discussion:

Dida from Augsberg brought up a very important development in the EU that is threatening photographic freedom. To me, it is unenforceable. However, our right to share such photos in the future may be threatened when Internet providers refuse to let us upload our images. Below is the context of Dida's statement as well as a link to the petition she provided. Hope everyone who believes in artistic freedom signs it so that the EU reconsiders.

"The European Parliament [...] believes that the commercial exploitation of photographs, video material or other images of works that are permanently placed on physical public places, should always be subject to the prior consent of the author or other agent"

Text of the petition -- www.change.org/p/european-parliament-save-the-freedom-of-photography

On 9 July 2015, the European Parliament might destroy photography.

The Freedom of taking photos in public places is under attack. Until now, in most countries in Europe you were safe to take and publish photographs that are taken from public ground – This is called Freedom of Panorama. When you were on vacation, you could take a photo from the London Eye and share it with your friends on Facebook*. If someone wanted to pay you for using this photo, that was okay as well. Both is about to change may destroy photography as we know it.

Julia Reda, member of the European Parliament, tried to bring the Freedom of Panorama to all countries of the EU, as few countries like France and Italy don’t have such law yet. In the majority of countries such as the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria and Croatia, you’re safe to take, publish and sell photos of public buildings when taken from public grounds.

However, the current draft turned the proposal upside down. Instead of bringing the Freedom of Panorama to the few countries that don’t know such law yet, it would take it away from all those who do. With this, Street-, Travel- and Architecture-Photography would be dead as we know it. It is impossible to find out the architect of every public building in order to ask for permission before you can publish and possibly sell the photo.

I therefore call on the members of the European Parliament to
•Not limit the Freedom of Panorama in any way

and instead to
•Bring the Freedom of Panorama to all member states of the EU

so that the European Citizens can be assured to act within the law when taking and publishing photographs from public buildings anywhere in the European Union. This is necessary to embrace our European Culture and Art!

*As Julia Reda, member of the European Parliament, points out, even the private upload of a photograph on Facebook would need the consent of the architect, as with the upload you grant Facebook a license to commercially use the photograph.

There is NO tolerance for copyright infringement. I was notified of such a photo today. However, it had already been removed.

Because of an almost 3 hour search through 391 pages as well as else where on Ipernity, I won't be able invite new photos today. Please know, photos do NOT need an invite to be added to Tolerance.

It's sad that some people (fortunately a tiny handful at most here on IP) feel the need to "steal" someone else's work. :(

Thank you for understanding,
According to staff, ipernity is not for politics but for happy pictures.

Yes, she is passionate, frank and outspoken, but she is also witty and utterly objective in her view of this world, and in my opinion a great injustice has happened. I used to call her our Jeanne d'Arc.

In my view the explanation is ridiculous: where do you put the line between political and apolitical talk – especially in these days and ages? Or is it just that there are men who are so deeply hurt if outwitted by an attractive lady, that they must seek retaliation by exposing her to the staff upon some false premise, and politics was used just as an excuse? Yes, she has touché'd me many times, and I'm still alive.

I already wrote ipernity about this. Am I the next to be banned?

It comes along with it's own terminology and it took me a while to understand the basics although I am still struggeling with the precise definition of spam, as it is understood here. There seem to be spam free groups and spam free comment streams and if someone does not comply to the spam free rules, he will be punished severely? Removed from the group? His comments deleted? This is a minefield, especially for new folks like me! On the other hand I find this rather funny. What's the big deal? Why all the excitement?

In the world I came from it was for instance common and generally accepted practice to include links to other photos into the comment stream augmented by text such as "Look at this, I took this pic from the same location 20 years ago". Now, is this considered spam here? And if yes, why, because the intention ist not promotion of my or even somebody elses photo, but providing useful information to someone. And what the heck is wrong with "seen in". Is that an insult to anybody? Or obscene? I find it rather rude to be kicked out of a group, because someone else added a "Seen in" comment in my stream. Don't be so narrow-minded. Why not just keep cool and take it easy? If I don't like comments like "great shot" I simply don't answer, but ban the guy? That's silly!

Spo has started a discussion:

Tolerance is a good thing, of course, but IMHO the thing that prevents us from taking and sharing better pictures is intolerance in ourselves. We are so easily customed and weathered to take photos of things all others are taking, seeing things in the same manner as we have always seen, trying to comply with whatever technical standards ever concocted and desperately fearing to make any mistakes whatsoever, that we easily become intolerant to anything different, anything that diverge from the well threaded path.

In the end of the day, if the photo does not have a standpoint of its own, no photo sharing site won't make it any better no matter how many bells and whistles the site has or how tolerant the viewers there are.

Of course there are some basic rules based on how our eyes work and our psychology of perception, but they are all for breaking; the battle against intolerance should take place every time we are about to press that pesky shutter button.
